when it ends

Last week was the season finale of Game of Thrones.  I was almost relieved to see it come to a close, especially after the previous week’s episode – which caused me to lose sleep. I was seriously fretting over the fate of favorite characters. (Pathetic but true: I was waking up every night, worried about Sansa and Jon!) I spent hours reading spoilers, theories, and debating with fellow fanatics.

I was wrapped up like a mummy over this thing.

This is the mark of incredible storytelling – if a show can instigate this much care about fictional characters, you know it has to be good.  Rumor has been confirmed that the show will come to a complete end in two more (short) seasons. I don’t know if I should be anxious or relieved at that thought.

I’ll worry about that later because for now, I’ll move on, back to the daily grind of tarot readings and cat kneadings until the opening chords of the theme song start playing in the background while I pour myself a Cersei-sized glass of wine.

When something comes to an end, that’s all you can do.  Move on.  Let it go. Pour the wine.

Whether it’s a relationship, a job, a move, a loss, or some dragon-fueled fantasy show, when it’s over there is no point to holding on. Yet this is one of the biggest issues that many of the people who walk through my tarot door struggle with.  They hold on for dear life, even after a situation has been long gone – or in the process of leaving.  The fear of loss is so great but you know what?  No one gets spiritual by holding on.

You have to learn to let go.  Detach. Trust in the Universe.

Because sooner or later you come to realize that nothing is permanent.  Everything eventually must come to a close.

One of my favorite quotes sums this up brilliantly:

“We show up, burn brightly, live passionately,
hold nothing back, and when the moment is over, when our work is done, we step back and let go.” – Rolf Gates

Word.

Even a riveting show with My Jaime™ (yes, Jaime Lannister is my favorite character on the show – I’m trying to assert a little ownership here) must conclude.

And now I know it will happen.

Two seasons left.

No doubt I’ll be back in fret mode when I’m in the thick of the show but once it’s complete, once every tear has been shed and more of my favorite characters have been killed off in probably gruesome ways, once the last strains of the theme song blast in my living room, I’ll step back…and let go.
