Most heart-centered entrepreneurs have a website.  In this day and age, you’re leaving money off the table if you don’t have one.  When you consider that the new age industry is a 44 billion dollar industry, that’s a LOT of cheddar. There is more than enough for all of us.

However, you can’t expect to just slap one up and voila – instant sales machine.  Your site needs to work for you as hard as you work for your clients.  That means your brand needs to shine through clearly and your site needs to be user-friendly.

Start by looking at your site through a potential client’s eyes.

Is what you’re selling obvious or is it hidden through confusing images or vague web-copy?

Do you have a custom domain or are you using a free website building or blogging platform that adds their brand to your URL?  (Psst…you can get your own domain and forward it.)

Are your navigation buttons clear?  Cutesy names may be appealing but if your clients cannot understand where to buy your services, they’ll take a pass.

What about your payment process?  Can people easily make a purchase or do they need to jump through hoops?

How do people schedule appointments with you?  Do you use an online scheduler?  Is your scheduling process explained clearly on your site?

What does your about page say about you?  Have you updated it to match your recent career highlights?

Is your contact info easy to find?

Are you using a professional headshot or some pic that your little cousin Kenny took from the family reunion?

Do you have testimonials?  People like social proof that you’ve got skills, yo.

Social media links – where can people find you on the web?

Have you cleared out old programs and offerings?  Get rid of the dead weight.  Be ruthless in clearing out the stale stuff.  While you’re at it, delete useless sidebar gunk such as blogrolls, links, calendars, etc.

Do you have a newsletter?  Do you have a page which specifically tells people what to expect when they sign up for your newsletter? What kind of opt-in might your subscribers get when they add their email to your list?  (The better your opt-in, the faster your list will grow.)

Is there a FAQ page on your site?  How about a privacy policy as well as a terms + conditions page?  This stuff will help to educate your clients about your work but also make them feel safe.

Your site doesn’t have to be beautiful but it does need to be functional.  Look at it as a client might because in this case, that potential customer might just be be right.

Blessings,

Theresa
