Talkin’ Tarot With is a monthly feature designed to introduce my readers to different tarot readers from our wonderfully diverse community!  Each month, I’ll be asking various tarot readers 3 questions about their tarot philosophy and style, plus pointing you to their websites and blogs so that you can learn more about them!  I like to hand pick tarot readers that I feel are talented and interesting.

steven bright tiferet tarot

I first learned about Steven Bright of Tiferet Tarot through the tarot blogging community. His intelligent posts really spoke to me and I knew I needed to get to know more about him. I’m glad I did. Not only is Steven a gifted tarot reader and writer, he’s a pretty nice guy.

He’s been reading tarot for almost two decades and blogging about it for eight years. His blog is full of fantastic content: reviews, weekly card readings, personal anecdotes, and thoughtful tarot interpretations such as this one for the Six of Pentacles: “Often, we do not recognise those things we have to offer. Even when it feels as though we are the ones in greatest need, we still have wisdom to depart, time to share, and physical belongings we no longer have a need for. How can you assist or help somebody else to feel better about them self this week? We all have something we can share with someone else.” As Steven says: “my blog is where most of the ‘tarot-magic’ happens.”.  He’s right.  It’s a very magical place for fellow tarotists.

Steven is not only a tarot reader and avid blogger, but also a teacher.  He began teaching beginner’s tarot courses last year and has also been busy creating tarot circles to help other tarot fans improve their skills.  In addition to all this goodness, he sews tarot bags, studies Kabbalah, and is creating a deck called The Tarot of Silhouettes:  “It initially started out as illustrations for my website, but since people began to enquire about it becoming a physical deck and have praised it, I am thinking about ways it could become published. It would be my dream to become a published tarot artist and to write about my personal experiences with tarot, using my own set as illustrations.” I’m crossing my fingers that this deck becomes a reality!

What is Tiferet?  On his site, Steven explains it as: “Tiferet is the sixth sefira on the kabbalistic Tree of Life. It has the common association of spirituality, balance, integration, and compassion.”

That’s a perfect name for his site because that describes him to a T.  Get to know this wonderful tarot reader and be sure to read his marvelous blog at Tiferet Tarot.

Steven is based in Kent and offers tarot readings vie email, Skype, and private parties.  Purchase a reading or get one of his snazzy tarot bags here.

Q: What is your philosophy about tarot reading?

Steven: I have always been a visual person, so the tarot readily became a way of visually locating aspects of my life and then finding ways to help me understand them. I realized pretty quickly that the 78 images (and many, many combinations of cards) could accurately convey meaning and truth for others too. These days, I gain great joy from helping people to join the dots and find different ways of taking control of their life by making the best use of the things which happen in it.

When I think of the tarot, I think of seventy-eight doors – some which have been opened, some which have not, and others which remain locked and painful to look behind. We all have them. Some are deep within our subconscious and are not so easy to access alone.

The tarot brings these metaphoric doors onto the table for my client and I to consider. As a team, we will work out which might be best to walk through and how we can find the keys for those experiences and opportunities which will inevitably be more difficult. Therefore, I see the tarot cards as the components of every person who sits before me. When they become shuffled up (as all things do in life), it is my job as a reader to make sense of the pattern and help my client find the most beneficial way of stepping forward.

Q: How do you feel a client might get the most out of a reading with you?

Steven: Every reader is different, as is every client. I used to worry that I was different to other readers I’d seen, but now, I realize that my down-to-earth and approachable style is my unique selling point. I endeavor to help a person see clearer by offering practical suggestions in a tarot reading. If a person leaves my table feeling better than when they sat down, then I feel as though I have done my job effectively.

My goal is for every person who sits with me to feel empowered after a reading. I do not believe I can solve people’s problems in thirty minutes but I do hope that I can provide them with a handful of spiritual tools, insight and some awareness. My aim is for them to learn how to deal with any difficulties they have by them self.

Q: What is your best piece of advice for an aspiring tarot reader?

Steven: I advise my own students to begin small and practice. There are so many exciting decks, people, books, and novelties in the world of tarot these days; it’s difficult to resist trying to run before you can walk. However, at the risk of sounding boring, those early steps are the most important and are the foundation of all you learn in tarot. Keep spreads small, stick with a deck you can understand clearly in the beginning, journal your thoughts, and practice.  In time, you will find your own ‘tarot-voice’.

There are many wonderful tarot blogs online these days, where you can read other people’s daily interpretations of the tarot. Sharing experience with others on a similar path is both fun and rewarding. These are great places to interact and learn. I always welcome comments and questions on my own blog.
