Talkin’ Tarot With is a monthly feature designed to introduce my readers to different tarot readers from our wonderfully diverse community!  Each month, I’ll be asking various tarot readers 3 questions about their tarot philosophy and style, plus pointing you to their websites and blogs so that you can learn more about them!  I like to hand pick tarot readers that I feel are talented and interesting.

Talking Tarot with Elle North

Magical. Ethereal. Sublime. Pure of heart.

That’s how I would describe Elle North of Drawing Within. I was introduced to her mystical world a few years back, when her gorgeous images floated across my screen. Who is this person?  I had to know.

Digging deeper, I discovered that Elle wasn’t some mythical creature (although I secretly think she is part unicorn).  She’s real.  And multi-talented.  Elle is an artist.  An intuitive Reiki master. A yogi and ritualist.  She is a unique + playful cosmic blend of different creative and spiritual modalities.  She’s a modern Renaissance woman, looking to empower and heal seekers from every walk of life.

With offerings ranging from tarot readings, to spiritual mentorship, crystal meditations,  courses galore, and more – if you are yearning to be empowered and delighted, this is the place to be.

Elle is also the author of 108 Days of Sacred Intention, a daybook of sorts, with inspirational prompts to get your spirit moving and wisdom popping. This book has mantras, chakras, yoga…all good stuff designed to deepen your connection to yourself and the present moment.  Put this next to your bed and journal before sleep – or get a prompt to start your day of spiritually fresh!  It’s all good.

Ready to connect with the sacred, discover your intuitive gifts, and heal those tender spots?  Elle North is the balm for your soul, sister.  And that’s not a myth.

Q:  What is your philosophy about tarot reading?

Elle: I see tarot as a tool for soul-seekers.  For me, I see tarot as less of a fortune-telling device and more as way of deepening my intuition and connection to my spiritual self.  I believe that Tarot is a powerful means of shifting one’s perspective or motivating someone to move forward with specific action steps.

I have a daily routine of pulling at least one tarot card a day.  In this way, working with the tarot is an invitation for myself to dive into a spiritual practice.  When I ask a question to the tarot, I allow the tarot to offer me another view of a situation or to show me something I would not have otherwise seen or recognized.  When I look at the tarot cards in my personal practice, I find a sense of inner peace and also of amazement, for the tarot always shows me something magical.  I most frequently use the tarot as a way to develop an action plan for goals that I have in my spiritual and design businesses, and find the actions that the tarot offers to be the most helpful component of my readings with clients as well.

I like to see the tarot as a mirror – it shows us the picture of a situation with a bit more clarity, and reflects our inner selves back to us so that we can gain a better understanding of who we are on a soul-level.

Q:  How do you feel a client might get the most out of a reading with you?

Elle: To start off, I guide my clients towards avoiding asking questions that can be answered with a ‘yes’ or ‘no.’  Instead of questions like “Will I…” I prefer to dive into reading the tarot around statements like “I would like some insight around…”  When questions are more open-ended, there is a lot more freedom for the cards to speak to me in an intuitive way.

Another thing to keep in mind is that I may see something within the cards or a pairing of cards that is not in-line with the traditional meaning of the card.  When I work with the tarot, my intuition plays a huge part in my reading process, so sometimes I might see things that are far from what you may see if you were to look up the  meaning of a card in a booklet.

Lastly, I remind my clients that a positive or negative reading may give insight as to what to do,  but that doesn’t mean the reading is set in stone.  If the reading has a positive outcome, it is important to remember that the client cannot just rest on her laurels…the action plan needs to be put into place in order for this positive outcome to manifest.  Sometimes the cards tell us something we don’t want to hear, but I truly believe that these predictions are something that can be changed.  The tarot can serve as a warning, an awareness that invites us to take action to work towards a more positive outcome.

Q:  What is your best piece of advice for an aspiring tarot reader?

Elle: The thing that really helped me when I first started to study the tarot was to develop my own meaning for each card and to allow my intuition to come forward when I was giving readings.  These are two things that I stress and guide students through in my Tarot Within course.  When you look at the cards daily and make them a part of your daily practice, you get to know them on a level where they become like friends.  In that way, you start to almost have conversations with the cards, and you invite them to speak to you in a unique way.

I also started giving tarot readings to friends even before I had my own deck.  When I got my own deck, I continued to practice giving readings to my friends, and this really helped me to feel comfortable offering readings to clients once I felt like I had developed a clear understanding of the cards.
