just say yes

I have this terrible, sneaky little habit.  No, it’s not smoking or something sinister (my penchant for reckless living was tamed many moons ago).

It’s mind stuff.

Specifically, every single time something great happens in my life, I celebrate for one minute and then…I worry.  My worries will range from the fear that it won’t happen or stressing over the details. I’ll lose sleep wondering if the bottom will drop out, the rug be pulled out from under my feet, or that minds will be changed and I’ll be left hanging….

I start thinking “what if…it’s too good to be true?”

This is insane because 99% of the things I worry about never come true.

But for a kid who got accustomed to being let down, the expectation is there, even though my adult world is very different.  Good things happen all the time and my peeps are hella reliable.  I know this.

Yet a week ago, as I was walking with my Taoist husband, I started fretting and brooding about all kinds of irrational fears around something good that was  happening in my life.  Finally he turned to me and said “you need to learn how to just say yes.”  Troof.

Ah…that old “upper limit problem”.  If you’re not familiar with the “upper limit problem”, it’s a phrase coined by Gay Hendricks in his phenomenal book The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level. It’s kinda like this: you fear deep down inside that you don’t deserve happiness and success.  So when it comes, you sabotage it.  You might manifest sickness or create some other problems in your life. Which means you don’t enjoy one minute of your success. You stay in a “safe zone” instead of your “Zone of Genius.”

This stems from childhood, often from being told things like “don’t outshine your sibling” or “don’t brag” or “you think you’re better than us”.  That conditioning is hard to break.  But if you don’t break it, you limit your capacity to receive.  You don’t fully say yes.  And that’s a life (and success) half-enjoyed.

For me, this last year has been amazing.  I’ve achieved so much and I’m on the cusp of some rad new things. I’ve been ballin’, big time. And it’s freaking me out.

I know this upper limit crud is trying hard to Grinch my joy. But I’m not having it.

I won’t let it.

I want this too much.  I am getting down with success. When you believe, you can receive.  I want to receive so much more.

So I’m going to say yes and stop with the icky “what if” upper-limit-malarkey. Yes to success. Yes to good things and new heights.  Yes to getting my genius on.  Yes, yes, YES.
