monster

Happy Halloween!

I hope you’re gobbling lots of candy and hanging with your favorite goblins today!

On this end, that won’t be happening because I’m on a diet. Guess I’ll be eating an apple kinda like back in the day when those lame “anti-sugar” parents would put one in my Halloween sack. Yay. NOT.

But that’s okay. Halloween isn’t just about the candy – it’s also about the tricks ‘n ghouls. And I gotta admit, I happen to like that part the best.

Back in the day, every Saturday night was Halloween because we were glued to the television for Shock Theater, a campy horror feature with classic films such as Frankenstein.

These films were entertaining and sometimes a bit scary, especially to a gaggle of kids munching on pizza rolls in their pajamas. We loved those films!

My favorite: Gargoyles, a modern (back then) horror flick about an anthropologist and his daughter who discover a community of gargoyles living in a cave. The gargoyles were just trying to do their thing (including a breeding room with hatching baby gargoyles!) but the humans had to go and ruin it.

At least that is how I saw it. Because truth is, I always sympathized with the monsters. The humans…not so much.

Even when the movies tried to portray the monsters as frightening, I thought the humans were much scarier with their mob mentality.

I felt sorry for the monsters. I rooted for them, all the way.

Maybe it’s because the monsters seemed frightened. Often, rightfully so.

Maybe it’s because some of those so-called monsters had a soft or romantic side (King Kong was a true romantic, yo.)

Maybe it’s because I understood them. Although I couldn’t articulate it at the time, growing up in a small town with that small town mentality where conformity is king and anything different is treated as a threat…yeah, that.

You can be seen as a monster, even if you don’t wear a costume. And for some, the costume of normalcy hides the real monster within (ever notice how serial killers look remarkably average?).

So tonight, I’ll be huddling under the blanket, safe from the outside world, with popcorn and my one glass of wine (no pizza rolls – diet, remember?) and empathizing with gargoyles, vampires, creatures and ghouls.

Except zombies. I draw the line at zombies.

I picked up this little gem recently.  Learned that Virgo men are my worst match.  Yet, I’ve been married to one (happily I might add) for almost 25 years.
