Talkin’ Tarot With is a monthly feature designed to introduce my readers to different tarot readers from our wonderfully diverse community!  Each month, I’ll be asking various tarot readers 3 questions about their tarot philosophy and style, plus pointing you to their websites and blogs so that you can learn more about them!  I like to hand pick tarot readers that I feel are talented and interesting.

Some people sparkle.  And then there are those who CRACKLE with white hot magic.  That’s how I would describe Paige Zaferiou,  the glittery force of nature behind Paige Z’s Tarot and Tea.

She caught my eye on Twitter a while back and I was taken in with her gorgeous prose and tarot smarts.  Her blog is a “must read” for tarot fans, especially you are looking for something that is way different than the usual tarot fare.  Paige’s writing is exceptional – poetic, deep, and  intelligent.  But what I love most about her work is her incredible vulnerability.  She shares her journey with so much raw honesty that I feel like I’m seeing inside her soul when I read her work. It’s profound (and intimate) stuff, yo.

Naturally, I knew I needed to get a reading from her – and I was not disappointed.  Her reading style is very much like her writing: soulful but whimsical.  That balance between deep and light is a tricky one to walk but she’s got it down.  (Interestingly, we were both drinking Dragon Well tea at the time of the reading – synchronicity soul sistahs!)

Paige Zaferiou has a simple philosophy. Magic is everywhere – you just have to look for it. As a magical practitioner, tarot reader, and tea maven, she has devoted her life to helping people rediscover magic in their own lives. One client described her as “a feisty wizard,” while another declared her to be “Mary Poppins with a magic bag full of teacups and tarot cards.” When she’s not reading cards and pouring tea, you can find her playing the ukulele, singing about chickens, and searching for the perfect piece of pizza. Transform the way you experience magic at www.paigezee.com.

Paige revealed to me that she’s got something fab up her mystical sleeves: “Starting this year, you’ll find me launching a brand new service called Magic in a Box. I’m putting my magpie collector skills to good use by delivering monthly care packages to magical folk! Limited spots available – to get on the list, email me at zaferiou@gmail.com (I love receiving mail!).”  If you’re looking for a magical reader with some mad tarot skills served up with a side of tea and whimsy, this is the gal you’ve been waiting for.

1. What is your philosophy about tarot reading?
I believe that Tarot is an invaluable and versatile tool for creating and planning the life you want.

I love comparing Tarot to a GPS – a Tarot reading can show you where you’ve been, where you are right now, your present trajectory, the likely destination, and alternate routes you could take. But as we all know, the GPS does not actually control the trajectory of your car – YOU remain in complete control at all times.

And that’s mega-empowering, yo! Considered in this light, a Tarot reading is a transformative experience in which the client is reminded of their power to act – and given information which she can either choose to ignore OR use to make informed decisions.

At the same time, while I believe that regular consultation of the cards is extremely beneficial, over-dependence is unhealthy. You wouldn’t drive with your eyes glued to the GPS screen – you drive with awareness of your surroundings and keep your eyes on the road. Tarot is a useful guidance tool – not the driver. It cannot make decisions for you, and it cannot drive your life forward.  BUT YOU CAN! Unh! Yeah! Get it done!

2. How do you feel a client might get the most out of a reading with you?
Baby kitten, get ready to have fun! A reading with me will definitely involve silly voices, funny faces, and plenty of wild hand gestures. That’s why I do readings via Skype and FaceTime – without video, you miss out on a big chunk of the experience. I like to have fun and see my clients smile!

That said, the content of our reading is certainly not fluffy. I read for the major stuff in your life – but I find that clarity often comes more easily when you approach a difficult situation with a light heart.

My readings are 100% positive – no matter how challenging your situation may be. Part of my gift is genuinely seeing the best in everyone, and I’m all too happy to tell you what I see. If you’re reading with me, get ready to feel good and have a blast!  CHICKA YEAH!

3. What is your best piece of advice for an aspiring tarot reader?
Trust yourself. Finding your stride as a tarot reader requires a balance between intuition and knowledge – and for many of us, studying is the easy part. It can be difficult to really, truly trust yourself in a world that often relies on self-doubt for sales. But you can do it! As a reader, it is extremely important that you listen to both your head AND your gut.

I’ve found that the best way to cultivate a practice is to…practice! Every day I draw two cards and post them to Instagram. It keeps my intuitive skills honed, and sharing the cards in public keeps me accountable. Experiment and discover what kind of daily practice works best for you.

When it comes to your studies, go beyond the booklet that came with your deck. Learn the history of Tarot, the origin of the suits, the significance of the numbers, the symbolism of the imagery. Find resources that really resonate with you.

But remember: all the knowledge in the world won’t help you if you can’t listen to the voice of intuition inside you and trust it.  Above all – trust yourself.
