Burning birthday candles number 49 on a wooden background

I can no longer deny it.  I’m middle aged.  Like, almost ready for the senior citizens discount and AARP knocking at my door middle aged.  I’m gettin’ old.  (I don’t mind either.)

I turned 49 yesterday with a roomful of my favorite people, some fancy appetizers, and a Tyrion Lannister action figure.  (Yeah, that’s how I roll – with plastic toys!)  I’m one of the rare people who can honestly say that I’ve done everything on my bucket list (main goals: live in NY, work on a newspaper, hang out with foxy musicians). I also have everything I want in my life: a loving husband (who is also hot), terrific children, two fine cats, a house I love, a career that brings me joy, good health.

In other words, it’s a full life and it’s been a curious, fun ride thus far.  (Not always easy but always interesting.)  So what’s next?  What do I want to do?  What are the 49 things I need to do before I turn the big five-0 (PS I want someone to play the Hawaii 5-0 theme song for me next year.)

I sat down and compiled a list and it turns out the stuff that lights me up these days are lighthearted and practical.  (I have plenty of meaning in my life and I can get to some of that deeper stuff later, yo.  For now, I need simple kicks.)

  1. Try on an Andy Warhol wig and take a selfie in it.
  2. Throw a plate on the ground and yell “opa!”  (No, I’m not Greek.)
  3. Finish a book on my bookshelf.
