Reshuffle, please!

Two days a week, I am on Instagram for a live astrological forecast with a side of tarot cards. I pull cards for every sign of the zodiac as additional guidance for the week or weekend ahead. While I’d love to pull nothing but the Sun for everyone, eventually one sign gets the Tower. This is met with a playful chorus of “reshuffle, please!” It always cracks me up.

Back when I used to offer one-on-one sessions, there would be times when a querent did not like their cards. Most of the time, they’d ask for advice. On occasion, a persistent type would insist I reshuffle in an effort to get the cards they wanted. Nine out of ten times, it was a question about an ex. (Not kidding.) Sometimes, they’d get the same cards or something that delivered a similar message. Frustrated, they’d do it again…or ask the question in a different way. Eventually, the tarot would short-circuit, giving increasingly contradictory answers. It turned out to be a waste of my time – and theirs.

However, they’d be happy once they got the desired prediction, only to come back later, mad that the first reading was the most truthful.

Before you think I’m ripping on other people, I’ve been guilty of this same behavior. Yep, I’ve asked the same question like a gambling addict pulling a lever on a slot machine. The first reading, the one I didn’t like, was accurate. Bummer!

It sucks when you don’t get the “good” cards. But it’s not healthy to continue to pester the tarot. A reshuffle for the same question rarely leads to a happy outcome. On some level, you know that the first reading was spitting truth. Which means you’re not confident with the prediction. So now you’re walking away, temporarily placated – and possibly set up for a big-time disappointment down the road.

The solution? When you get a reading you don’t like, stop. Restrain your urge to reshuffle. Write your original reading down in your journal, then leave it alone. Revisit it later. Maybe you’ll see the wisdom. Or perhaps those cards will be wrong and you’ll have the outcome you wanted.
