The Hit List - The Calling

What’s my calling? That’s a question tarot readers receive a lot. It’s a big question, and sometimes, the cards don’t have the answer. Instead, choices, mistakes, and random events can steer the course. Other times, the revelation comes through an instinct or epiphany.

While a calling or life purpose is often associated with work, it’s not always the case. Some folks are destined to play important roles that may have zilch to do with a vocation. For example, my mother dreamed of being a parent. It’s all she ever wanted. At 29, she finally got her wish. (Psst…we were a lot of work.)

My fate was sealed early when I picked up a tarot deck on a whim. Ten years later, it became my life’s work.

Sometimes, your calling changes. That could happen for many reasons. As I approached fifty, I had a nagging feeling that I wanted to do something different with my life. I wanted to write full-time (about tarot and astrology, of course). I didn’t know how that could happen or if it was wise to leave a successful career. Once my first, then second, and third books were published, the kick inside became too loud to ignore.

But still, I was fearful of pulling the plug. Then the pandemic came, and the world stood still. I mused out loud on a Facebook page about closing down the reading business to write and teach full-time. My friend Liz Worth commented, “You could do that now.”

It felt like a sign.

So I did.

And here I am now, six years later, living my dream. I love, love, love to write and teach. For the first time in my life, I feel like I am sitting exactly where I’m meant to be at the ripe old age of sixty-one. Better late than never.

Because that’s the thing: your calling becomes clear when it’s good and ready. And: it can change. Who knows? Maybe one day, I might be drawn to something else, like space exploration (I am obsessed with black holes). It’s never too late.
