The Hit List - The ends of eras

Yesterday, I stepped into Free Spirit Crystals for the last time. This beloved shop has been a favorite haunt for mystical seekers. But now, the owner is ready to retire. She’s heading to a cabin in the woods to write music. It’s sad, but at the same time, it feels so right for her.

As I walked through the shop, jostling elbows with other crystal fanatics picking through the already picked-over stock, I couldn’t help but feel wistful. This marked the end of an era.

It seems there have been many endings of eras around me. Bowie, Petty, and Prince leaving this earthly plane felt like the music of my youth came crashing down. The loss of tarot legend Rachel Pollack made me look around the tarot industry and wonder who will take her place. (The short answer: no one.) The annual tarot event, Reader’s Studio, changed hands (the new hands are wonderful stewards). Television shows concluded, trends have died, and folks are moving on to the next hot thing (whatever that is). I’ve watched people around me morphing into completely different versions of who they used to be, sometimes not in a good way. Don’t get me started on the political landscape. I’ll save that for another day, another post.

My world has had substantial endings, too. Covid closed my yoga studio after almost twenty years in the bending business. Four years ago, I retired from reading tarot for the public. I’m back to caregiving for a loved one, which means my travel days are limited. Am I a tarot dinosaur? A dodo bird? Over and done? Is this the end of my own personal era? I think about it (next to my obsession with black holes, it’s top of my anxiety list lately).

Chapters must come to a grand finale. Yes, this is typical as you age. I’m sure my parents felt the same way when they lost relatives, retired, and so on. Eras end. Yet rumors suggest the dodo bird will be brought back from extinction. Not sure if that’s a fantasy or a fact. I guess we’ll have to see.

But what’s next? Who grabs the torches? What new story will I write? Or am I simply in the wind-down phase? I don’t have the answers to any of that. All I know is nothing is permanent. Trends come and go, people pass on, and something new emerges from the ashes. All I can do is move on and remain open to what was…and what might happen.
