The Hit List - Getting back out there

Confession: I’m super introverted. You’ll never guess that because I put myself out in the public on the regular. Over the years, I’ve been on main stages, podcasts, and I’ve hosted a regular Instagram live. It might seem like I’m an extrovert when you see my mug all over the place.

The truth is: I always feel uncomfortable. I think fellow introverts who are in the public eye can relate to that.

I’ve avoided events and travel for the past two years due to the pandemic. But now that restrictions are easing up, lots of folks are doing public shindigs…and a few invites have landed in my lap. I’ll be saying no to most of them. I’m not ready plus I kinda dig my new hermit life!

Still, there are reasons to “get back out there” in some form or another. A family celebration at the end of this month, for one. And two book launches – one in May and another in April. There may even be a small trip, too. By train because I’m a bit terrified of planes at the moment.

Of course, I’m overthinking it. After all, I have not been in many group situations for some time. How will I cope? Will I have a panic attack (I’ve had a few mild ones before)? Will people be mindful of my desire for physical space? Or will I need to erect stiff boundaries right off the bat – and if I do, how will that land?

These are some of the things introverts have to think about when they venture into public spaces, pandemic or not. It’s never fun and it’s also hard to explain, especially when you seem so comfy in those places.

So, deep breaths, and here I go, like it or not.
