“How do you remain so positive when everything seems to be a dumpster fire?”

I get asked that question from time to time. The truth is, I’m not always a shiny beacon of joy. I have plenty of moments when I feel down about the state of the world. However, I don’t like to stay there. It makes it too hard to remain productive, something that is important to me. (You can blame my German father for that workaholic stuff.)

Instead, I catch myself – and then do the one thing that shifts my gears: I go outside.

There is something about a walk in my neighborhood that sparks instant happiness. It might be the fresh air. Or maybe the friendly faces. Sometimes, it’s the dogs I encounter or the bees buzzing around rose bushes. Even when the weather is gloomy, my surroundings are teeming with life, vibrancy, and beauty.

It’s a reminder that there are reasons to keep going, to stay hopeful, to love.

My other mindset shift comes from doing what I can to alleviate someone else’s pain. Donating to good causes, sending snail mail to friends, sharing information online – there is always something to do.

How can you stay blue when you can do little things to make this world a better, more tolerable place, one person at a time?

We must remember that the world has always been dramatic and scary because humans can be terrible. So let’s not assume this is the worst of times, or that we cannot move past it. History has shown we are resilient -and we are remarkable when we come together. It’s never too late. There’s always hope.
