The other day, I went down an internet rabbit hole. I was chasing a salacious story (won’t get into it here) and needed to know the details. While it made for riveting reading, something happened along the way.
I started to feel gross.
Maybe that’s not the right word. It was more like a mix of curiosity, discomfort, and sadness. Emphasis on the last part. I’m ultra-sensitive, so I tend to feel things down to the bones – and sometimes, I can feel other people’s pain. In this case, I became too invested in the story, particularly the person caught in the middle of a vile situation, partly due to their decisions, which were driven by desperation – and manipulation from the other side.
Once I saw the photos and started to read the cruel online commentary, I decided to close the laptop and check out. I had had enough.
When you’re tenderhearted, it’s hard to be online. It’s one of the reasons I limit my time (I’m on the internet far less than you might think – I have a “cut and run” strategy). However, in some cases, it’s easy to get sucked into drama and fear. Too easy. In fact, the news cycle counts on it. Hence, they tend to report all the bad stuff with little acknowledgment of positive events. You have to dig for that.
The world is insensitive. It thrives on pain. And sometimes, you find yourself going along for the ride, even though you know the destination isn’t going to make you feel good. So what to do? You certainly can’t be an ostrich. Develop a thick skin? Meh. That means ignoring shit, too.
Instead, it’s better to feel – and acknowledge those feelings. Your sensitivity is a reminder that you’re a human. To lose your sense of empathy is to lose part of yourself. But it’s also wise to know when to leave the rabbit hole. Because most of the time, it’s a trap.

I’m Theresa Reed (aka, The Tarot Lady). I’ve been a full-time tarot reader for 30+ years — which, in my industry, makes me pretty badass.
I’m definitely not your average Tarot expert — I drop the F-bomb, I quote rappers, and I’m obsessed with pop culture. Folks come to me for straight-talk + tough-love — without the woo-woo fluff.
