Many years ago, I was at a tarot roundtable with the legendary Mary K Greer. The topic: tarot fundamentalism. This was an opportunity to explore the opinions that we held dear. Participants discussed some of their rigid tarot “rules” while Greer challenged their line of thinking. It had a huge impact on me.
At the time, I was under the belief that if you didn’t read reversals, you were just too lazy to learn the other 78 meanings. I got schooled on that assumption – and it opened my mind. Lots of folks didn’t use them – and were excellent readers.
It didn’t need to be my way or the tarot highway. There are many, many ways to read tarot. What works for me, works for me. It doesn’t have to work for someone else.
While there are generally accepted truths in tarot and astrology, there is always room for new thoughts, different techniques, and nuance. But if you go online, you’ll find plenty of strong opinions about the “right” way. While tarot and astrology may conjure up images of laid-back hippies from Hair (RIP Treat Williams), there are lots of uptight types, too.
Don’t believe me? Ask about tarot reversals (you now know my answer: up to you!). State your opinion about astrological house systems (Placidus vs Whole Signs). Post a pop astrology meme. Go ahead. I dare you. It won’t take long for someone to swoop in with a strongly worded take-down.
There is nothing wrong with being an advocate for your preferred method. But when you try to shove it down other people’s throats with a side of self-righteousness, it serves nothing but your own ego. That doesn’t help anyone. It doesn’t help tarot or astrology, either.
Unless someone is stating something that is obviously a mistake (Taurus is ruled by Pluto!), try being a little more tolerant. Let folks do their thing – and you do yours. We don’t have to agree, but we can coexist without being dicks.

I’m Theresa Reed (aka, The Tarot Lady). I’ve been a full-time tarot reader for 30+ years — which, in my industry, makes me pretty badass.
I’m definitely not your average Tarot expert — I drop the F-bomb, I quote rappers, and I’m obsessed with pop culture. Folks come to me for straight-talk + tough-love — without the woo-woo fluff.
