The Hit List - Thoughts at 61

I turned 61 a few days ago. It wasn’t a monumental day. In fact, it was low-key. Exactly the way I wanted. The days of big celebrations are behind me. I’m not interested in hoopla or excess.

This vibe goes deeper than that. As I creep closer to official senior citizen status, I crave simplicity. Don’t get me wrong: I am a maximalist. My desires are not for less of my creature comforts, but fewer dramas. I no longer have the capacity for nonsense.

That became abundantly clear in the past few months. A few unwelcome intrusions on my peace gave me more than one moment to pause and reconsider the direction of my life. Do I want to be so accessible? What measures might I take to shore up my security? Is it time to pivot (again)? Is there a smarter way to be in the world without being dragged down by it? How can I politely refuse to engage in other people’s drama?

All of that.

I’m afraid I don’t have answers…yet. However, my always-right Virgo husband decided a few new boundaries wouldn’t hurt. Especially online. We’ve implemented new strategies and personal guidelines so I can do my thing without my thing doing me in.

Next week, I will complete the final leg of my book tour. Once I’m home from that adventure, I’ll drill down further. What might simplicity look like? How might it feel? Are there new moves needed, or do I fine-tune what is already in place?

At the same time, I am creating new things behind the scenes. A tarot deck. Another book. New offerings. Art. None of that can happen if I’m overloaded, overstimulated, and constantly “on call.”

I’m pretty sure this is a natural part of getting older. After all, each year gone by is a reminder that time is running out. So why spend the rest of your life in anything that doesn’t light you up?

xo
