The Hit List - Where the joys are

Simple joys are sometimes easiest to find when life is hard.

I remember a time when I was super poor. I’m talking broker than a yolk. I managed to scrounge up a few coins and used that wee bounty to purchase a tuna salad sandwich at a bodega. Let me tell you – it was the best thing I ever ate. I sat on a step, devouring it, savoring every single bite. I hadn’t eaten in a day, so not one crumb was left. I still think about that sandwich. In a desperate, depressing moment, this brought me more pleasure than an expensive bottle of wine ever could.

My life no longer looks like that. But that doesn’t mean I don’t experience hardship. It’s just a different type.

For example, August has been a lot. We’ve had two major losses in one day. It felt like a huge, unreasonable kick in the gut. When you put this on top of the unending stream of bad news piped out over the internet, it’s safe to say this has been one hell of an awful month. Life is often messy, unpredictable, and sad.

I’m tired. I’m sure you are, too.

It’s hard to navigate this current hellscape. Even so, I do what I can to find little joys in my day-to-day life. It keeps me going when I feel that ole existential dread creeping in. It doesn’t need to be much: a small square of chocolate. New cake recipes. Silly videos. Long conversations with my bestie. Finding one little pleasure, even if only a moment of silence in a busy day, can prevent a doom spiral.

So today, and every day, find a little joy. Whatever makes you feel good and helps life feel more tolerable. That might be a day spent lost in a book (my plan). Or a tuna salad sandwich from your local bodega.
