all of my heroes are dead

“All of my heroes are gone. They’re all dead.” my husband said after finding out David Bowie had passed away the other day.

Last year, it was Christopher Lee. A few weeks ago, Lemmy Kilmeister of Motorhead. All artists who were influential, their work woven into the tapestry of our lives.

And the hits seem to keep coming. This week, actor Alan Rickman. Grizzly Adams. The Angel of Death has been busy.

It’s sad when your childhood heroes or the people you’ve grown up watching on television die. But it’s a fact that as you get older. It’s to be expected.

At this stage in life, loss is part of the game. Both of my parents. Most of my relatives (out of twenty blood aunts and uncles, only two remain). Long time friends and acquaintances. The father of my children. People we admired. Gone.

This loss business ain’t easy. It’s a reminder of how fragile our connections are, how precious our time is…and how quickly that time is running out. We are not immortal.

My body reminds me of this fact every day. I look at down at my once trim waist to see a body that now betrays my pants and doesn’t let me get away with decadent meals like it once did. Every burger, every glass of wine, every morsel of chocolate shows up and hangs on for dear life. My hair is silver and coarse. And my skin…still pretty good for my age but the tell-tale lines have settled in.

I’m getting old. My time here is scarcer and scarcer.

So what to do? Make the most of this time that is left. Do the things that you’ve always wanted to do. Live life on your terms. Get your avant-garde on. Ditch the low-vibe people and activities that no longer bring you joy. Connect deeply. Love with all your heart. Be unapologetically you.

Live. REALLY live.

Because at the end of the day, the legacy you leave behind may make you a hero for someone else.

Be that. And you will immortal.
