Typewriter QUESTION MARKS

This month, I’m answering some of your biggest, gnarliest (and most common) questions about tarot.

Today’s question:  Can Anyone Learn To Read Tarot?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: anyone can learn to read the tarot but it takes practice, patience and an open mind before you get competent.

Reading tarot is more complicated than it looks.  I often say that a tarot reader functions more like a detective – they are looking at symbols, patterns and energy and trying to figure out how that puzzle fits together for the client.

You cannot learn to do this by just reading the little white book that comes with the deck.

You need to get down and dirty and personal with your tarot.

That means reading for as many people as you can and for as many situations you can imagine (I prefer face to face readings to really grow your chops).  It also means doing readings for yourself when you have no practice buddies.  It means consistent daily effort – even when you don’t feel like it. It means COMMITMENT.

A seasoned reader gains skills by constant study. Books, blogs, correspondence courses, classes, conferences, lectures….the learning never stops because there is always a new way to look at the cards…a new question that may arise….an innovation from a clever tarot talent….

And then there is the question of the sixth sense part.  If you have latent intuition (we all do in my opinion), tarot may be the tool that will get that juicy stuff fired up.  If you think you don’t have any….well….you might just surprise yourself.

Reading tarot is like playing an instrument: we can all learn the notes and the correct positions for our hands but it’s the SOUL of the musician that really makes the music.  Study, practice, read often and you’ll “get it”.  Immerse completely and you’ll feel the pulse of tarot in your veins.

Very few of us are “born” tarot readers.  We develop our skill much as any artisan develops theirs.

So what are you waiting for?  Get your deck and start.  All it takes is that first flip of the card and you’ll be on your way.

Blessings!

Theresa
