Common (Sixth) Sense is a regular feature devoted to practical uses of intuition.  Making intuition simplistic for everyday mystics.

When I was two years old, I broke my leg and spent six weeks in traction.  My parents had to leave me at the hospital so I learned to enjoy being alone (and developed great reading skills- bonus!).  I also became quite adept at detaching emotionally when it was goodbye time when visiting time ended.

The ability to let go and get your feelings out of the way is vital if you are working with psychic energy in any form, professionally or otherwise.  If you do not have a way to detach, you risk burn out (or skewing the reading through projection and/or identification with your client).

Over the years, I’ve known many a well intentioned tarot reader, psychic, empath or healer who ended up getting seriously zapped from dealing with other people’s energy.

Here’s the deal: that doesn’t need to happen.  Whether you are a woo woo pro or simply someone who has a finely tuned psychic instrument, you’ll need to learn to release the energy or you could become drained like the family pool at the end of summer.

Detachment doesn’t mean that you have “no emotions” ala Mr. Spock.  It simply means that they are not getting in the way of your objectivity – and you are able to let go of your work once you are done.  Trust me, you don’t want to carry that stuff around with you.  Other people’s energy or problems are a very heavy cross to bear. The more you are able to release, the more effective your work – and the healthier and saner YOU will be.

Here are my very best tips for letting go and being a clean psychic slate:

  1. Meditation.  This helps you to reset your energy and get back into your own skin.  A few minutes every day and you are plugged in to your energy, rather than the whole world.  I love Change Your Aura, Change Your Life: A Step-by-Step Guide to Unfolding Your Spiritual Power by Barbara Martin.  The meditations in this book will help you to reboot yourself and strengthen your auric field.
  2. Boundaries.  Erect strong boundaries with clients, families and friends.  Resist the urge to do any sort of metaphysical work on demand.  Protect  your self by saying no.
  3. Get the issues out of your tissues.  I believe that some readings or intuitive experiences can “get under your skin” and in the long run, this can lead to a whole lotta harmful psychic sludge.  Physical exercise, massage and Reiki are musts for intuitives.
  4. Less work.  When you are in demand, it’s tempting to take on all the work the universe throws at you.  Don’t.  Take time off.  Have hobbies outside the woo woo sphere.  Spend time with people who have no interest in your work or metaphysical subjects.
  5. Do an “energy dump” at the end of the day.  I do this by having some much needed quiet time when my work day is over.  I also am a big fan of Donna Eden’s Energy Medicine for Women: Aligning Your Body’s Energies to Boost Your Health and Vitality .  The simple energy routines in this book have been very helpful.
  6. Salt baths.  Pour a cup of sea salt into a tub of warm water and soak for 20 minutes. This is great for super heavy situations (hauntings, medium work, negative psychic experiences).

Pain is for those who are attached.”
