the-hit-list-girls-like-meLong ago in a faraway land, I was dating someone that I was kinda nuts about.  Actually, I was really gonzo about him.  Like doe-eyed stupid.

Long story short, things fizzled and we parted ways but remained friends. It was better that way. Years later, we had an honest discussion about the demise of our less-than-fairytale union and he told me that the biggest problem was my independence.

He preferred a woman who “needed him” and told me that “girls like you might tell a guy to f*ck off.  And then you did.”

Girls like me.

It’s not the first time my independent streak got me in trouble. When I was four, I decided that I wasn’t going to church any more. I thought it was boring and the churchgoers were hypocrites (mind you, I didn’t know that word at four but I knew fakers when I saw ‘em). I also hated being told what to do by that dude in the robe with all the wine ‘n stuff.

My protest got me nowhere fast but I made up my mind that as soon as I turned eighteen, I would never go to church again.

I held that promise.

There is something about being under someone’s thumb that rubs me the wrong way.

My extreme need for freedom gets in the way of relationships (that dude wasn’t the first one to bitch about my independence), holding a regular job (can’t stand having a boss), participating in groups (no sir, don’t like ‘em), or any friendship that has a hint of obligation (those Sex in the City chicks would not dig my no-show on brunch day).

I get salty anytime I feel restrained. This does not make me a good candidate for Fifty Shades of anything.

So yeah…girls like me are a required taste.

Like good ole Charlotte Brontë says: “I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.”

She was a girl like me.

Theresa
