I’ve been with my partner for over three decades. That’s a long time. Tarot has been a part of my life for even longer. Any long-term relationship, even happy ones, needs a little spice on occasion.
Here’s why: in time, routines set in. While I’m a lover of structure, it can get a bit boring. After all, if you do the same thing day in and day out with the same person, where’s the fun in that? (Spoken like a true Gemini!)
Many readers have a “go-to” deck they use all the time. For example, the Rider Waite Smith is my workhorse tarot deck (currently loving the Weiser Tarot version). It always delivers reliable information, so I may stray from time to time, but I eventually return home. Over the years, I’ve learned to appreciate this deck’s trustworthiness – but I’ve also found ways to keep it hot.
Here are fun ways to rekindle the spark with your most well-loved tarot deck:
1. Introduce another deck into the relationship. This is what I call “mixed messages,” a practice where I read with two decks. I might use another tarot deck or choose an oracle deck instead. Shuffle my main squeeze, shuffle the new partner, and then pull cards from each deck – and combine for a reading! Shazam! Instant thrills (plus a good way to challenge your interpretation skills)!
2. Test out a new technique. If you’re an intuitive reader, explore elemental dignities. Don’t dig reversals? Do it anyway. Turn that sucka upside down! Not sure about Kabbalah? Mix it in and see how it changes your perspective.
3. Do it in unusual places. Yep, you read that right. Most of us have a space we use for readings – it can become a comfort zone. Yawn! Read tarot on a boat, in a bar, at a picnic in the park – anywhere but your typical spot. (I do not recommend while driving, though. Keep your eyes on the road!
4. Add new “toys.” I am a huge fan of charm casting since I learned about it from Carrie Paris and Andrew McGregor a few years ago at a tarot conference. Grab a few charms and toss them on top of the reading. Where do they land? Combine the charm with the card to gain new insights. Sizzle! Try other types of divination: bones, shells, pendulums – go buckwild!
5. Explore new positions. A fresh tarot spread might be just what you need to see your deck with new eyes. Need suggestions? I recommend Tarot Spreads: How to Read Them, Create Them, and Revise Them by Meg Jones Wall. It’s the most comprehensive, smart guide on how to create and work with spreads. So hot!
These are a few suggestions for bringin’ tarot back. Remember, just like a long-term love, your relationship with tarot needs an occasional surprise to keep it hot. By switching up your routines, spreads, or adding new elements, you can rediscover why you fell in love with that deck in the first place.
