star school an intro to astrology for total beginners

In the next part of our Star School series, we’re looking at the planets through the houses.

In this lesson, we’ll look at the Saturn in the houses in the natal chart.

Last month, we looked at Jupiter in the houses. This month, we’re looking at hard working Saturn.

Star School Lesson 29: Saturn in the Houses

Saturn is the hard taskmaster of the zodiac. Where it lands in your natal chart will give you a clue as to where you’re serious, responsible, ambitious, and disciplined. Keep in mind; this placement will also indicate where you need to work. If you do the work required, you could see tremendous growth and maturity. If you refuse to do it, you may see the same issues continue to crop up again and again until you take responsibility.

Saturn in the 1st house: This placement of Saturn indicates people who want to be taken seriously. They are concerned with their reputation and want respect. The truth is, they want to be liked. At times, they can come off as somewhat rigid or cold. It’s not that they are without feelings – it’s just that trust must be earned. This somber placement can also indicate someone who has a hard time loosening up. Don’t expect these types to put the lampshade on their head at your party – they’ll be the one busy tsk-tsking those fools. Dignity is their bag. An afflicted Saturn in the 1st can indicate an unhappy childhood or a selfish, untrusting person with a materialistic bent. Gimme gimme without giving is their method of operation. In some cases, they may create an impenetrable wall around themselves, where no one gets in. This is especially true if they achieve some level of success. For those types, they soon learn that it’s hella lonely at the top. If this is your placement, stop taking yourself so seriously. It’s okay to be silly, and popularity is overrated. Famous people with this placement: Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Russell Crowe, Sean Penn.

Saturn in the 2nd house: Saturn in the 2nd house peeps fall into two camps – either they are ambitious when it comes to making money, or they lack financial opportunities. For the former, they will work hard to acquire security, and they’ll manage their money with great responsibility. They can even accumulate wealth. For the latter, there may be hard work with little gain. Or they have such a deep fear of poverty that they live like misers, unable to part with their coins. In some cases, they struggle financially, become dependent on others, or may squander whatever money comes their way. Sometimes, this placement can indicate “poverty mindset,” that old “money is dirty” or “I don’t deserve the nice things in life” type of thinking. If they grew up poor, it might be hard to shake that, no matter how much money they are able to acquire. Some even sabotage their finances by living beyond their means or giving it all away. The key to this challenging placement is to respect money. That begins by being willing to work for it – and manage it.  Those who take responsibility not only overcome the challenges but can achieve great security in later life. Famous people with this placement: Kanye West, Prince, Jennifer Lawrence, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Saturn in the 3rd house: Saturn in the 3rd house types are serious folks. They’re smart too. They like to study, learn, and possess a fair amount of common sense. Third house Saturn people are also concerned with justice. They can be found in legal careers or standing on the front lines in social justice issues. That being said, they tend to worry and, if Saturn is negatively aspected, may be negative thinkers. This placement can produce complainers and critics, those types who will find something wrong in even the most wonderful situation. When they go negative, they are real “Debbie Downers,” and not much fun to be around. When they are operating on the high side of this placement, they can be intellectuals that accomplish a great deal. Travel is good for these somber folks. Little getaways keep them interested and interesting. When afflicted, Saturn in the 3rd can indicate trouble with siblings and neighbors – or problems with education. Famous people with this placement: Steve Jobs, Elvis Presley, Kylie Jenner, Meghan Markle.

Saturn in the 4th house: Family and home can be major responsibilities for people with 4th house Saturns. The parents may be extremely strict or overbearing – or they may be distant/absent, creating a sense of emotional isolation for the natives. Instead of enjoying warm family connections, they may feel “cut off” or let down by a parent, usually the father.  In some cases, the individual may become the caretaker for the parents – or may be tied to the family and unable to go off on their own (I always think that the character George Bailey from It’s a Wonderful Life, had this placement!). In worse case scenarios, Saturn in the 4th can indicate the failure to launch – that guy who is still sleeping on mommy’s couch when he’s forty years old. Much of this will be determined by whether or not Saturn is afflicted. Some of the gifts of this placement are an ability to manage or build a secure home, domestic skills, and possible inheritances. Lessons: boundaries with the family and standing on your own two feet.  Famous people with this placement: Tom Cruise, Madonna, Marilyn Monroe, Ernest Hemingway.

Saturn in the 5th house: Because the 5th house is connected to children, people with this placement may experience significant responsibilities with children. They may be a single parent, or there may be difficulties in getting pregnant. In some cases, they may decide not to have children. If Saturn is negatively aspected, they can be overly strict parents or, if severely afflicted, abusive aka“ Mommy Dearest.” This can lead to strained relationships with their children later in life. They need to learn to lighten up and be responsible without being hardcore. Their motto needs to be: let kids be kids. The 5th house also rules romance, which may create involvement with serious, mature types – or a lack of romantic opportunity. It’s also possible that they may be inhibited, which could put limits on their ability to find suitable partners. That being said, this placement can be great for teachers, stockbrokers, public relations agents, and artists. There is a natural talent in those areas, and if they put their attention there, they can achieve great success.   Famous people with this placement: Chris Brown, Mel Gibson, Courtney Love, Dean Stockwell.

Saturn in the 6th house: Saturn in the 6th house people are hard workers. They don’t mind though. They enjoy being of service and are often ideal employees. Efficiency and attention to detail make them good at managing organizations. They make lovely nurses, doctors, dietitians, and engineers. In fact, they can do well in any career that requires a keen, analytical mind. If Saturn is negatively aspected, they can be hypochondriacs or workaholics that neglect their health or their family for their careers. In some cases, this may produce Dwight Shrute types – people who aggravate their coworkers. That guy at the office who tattles on everyone for not doing their work? Probably an afflicted 6th house Saturn peep. Famous people with this placement: Lady Gaga, Jennifer Aniston, Keanu Reeves, LeBron James.

Saturn in the 7th house: This is actually an excellent placement for Saturn because of it’s connection to Libra, which rules the 7th house (Saturn is exalted in Libra). Responsibility and justice in relationships are important to people with this placement. They want fairness – which means they can be pretty awesome partners. They take partnerships seriously and will work hard to maintain them. Because of this, they make excellent workers, spouses, or business partners. If they go into law or social justice work, they can be quite capable. When Saturn is afflicted, they can use relationships for gain or may experience betrayal from enemies. It’s also possible that they may be aloof or critical to their partners, which certainly doesn’t create a warm fuzzy if you’re stuck with them. Early marriage is never wise for these guys. It’s better for them to wait until after thirty-five, even if Saturn is well-aspected. By that time, they will be less impulsive and more likely to find a mature, suitable partner. Famous people with this placement: Johnny Depp, Eminem, David Bowie, Lana Del Rey.

Saturn in the 8th house: When Saturn sits in the 8th house, there may be much responsibility around taxes, inheritances, and joint finances. Individuals with this placement must handle other people’s money with care – or, if Saturn is afflicted, they may face litigation, heavy taxes, or loss through alimony or unwise speculation. In some cases, they may lose their inheritance through unscrupulous family members or they may be denied their rightful legacy for other reasons (you pissed daddy off, and he wrote you out of the will). Sometimes, the marriage partner may come into the relationship with no money, which could create hardship.  Because of the connection to sex, 8th house Saturn people may experience inhibition or promiscuity. In deeply afflicted charts, sexual dysfunction is possible. The key to this tricky placement is to be responsible with money – and learn to let go of inhibitions with the sexual partner while remaining sexually responsible. In some texts, this placement can indicate a long life. Famous people with this placement: Jay-Z, Kristen Stewart, Sigmund Freud, Khloe Kardashian.

Saturn in the 9th house: This is an excellent placement. Saturn in the 9th can indicate a serious scholar. These truth seekers enjoy academia and may go on to higher education. In some cases, they may choose to work in educational institutions as professors or other such posts. Religion or philosophy may also be of interests, and in some cases, the individuals may be interested in taking on a role in a religious organization. Because Saturn is conservative, often their beliefs may be too. If Saturn is afflicted, they can be holy roller types or those who use their religion as a way to oppress others. Although the 9th house is associated with travel, Saturn here produces people who travel for work instead of pleasure. The 9th house rules in-laws, and if Saturn is sitting here, tis best to live as far from them as possible if you want to avoid drama. Famous people with this placement: Hillary Clinton, Uma Thurman, Prince Harry, Prince William, Marilyn Manson.

Saturn in the 10th house: Because Saturn rules the 10th house, this is the best placement of all. This lends well to career, and usually, the individual wants to achieve some sort of status. They have big ambitions and are willing to work hard to get to the top. They typically do attain their goals – and, in many cases, may find themselves in elevated positions. Their reputations are important to them, which means they usually will work hard to maintain in good standing with the public. That being said, they must maintain strict principles and operate out of integrity because this position of Saturn, especially when negatively aspected, can bring a rise followed by a fall from grace. In some cases, this placement can indicate a person who works hard but experiences many obstacles or a lack of opportunity. That guy who busts his ass but never gets the promotion? Yep. In some cases, it can produce a ruthless tyrant who rules their office with an iron fist. Sooner or later, these cruel despots get overthrown when people finally get sick of their oppressive, abusive behavior. Famous people with this placement: Michael Jackson, James Dean, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Clinton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Adolf Hitler.

Saturn in the 11th house: This is a positive placement for Saturn and indicates someone who takes friendship seriously. Often, these people will want to take care of their friends in some way. For example, they may help their friends achieve goals. Or they may help advance the careers of their buddies (the old “it’s who you know” or “old boys/girls network” thing applies here). Friends will also help them out in turn. They usually enjoy strong friendships, often with influential or older, mature people. However, in some cases, they may prefer a full circle of acquaintances with few confidants. Groups and organizations may also be of benefit for their goals. When Saturn is afflicted in this house, it can produce friends who use the individual or prove to be burdens in some way. I once knew a guy with this placement who was bled dry by his ne’er do well loser friends. He thought he was helping them out when in reality, they were sponging off him. Famous people with this placement: Donald Trump, George Clooney, Cameron Diaz, Freddie Mercury.

Saturn in the 12th house: When Saturn sits in the 12th house, solitude is needed. Folks with this placement need alone time or may work in some sort of behind the scenes type situation. Often, they choose to work in hospitals, charities, churches, institutions, prisons, or universities. In some cases, they may be drawn to government jobs, where they can work for the people in an anonymous way. Because they are ultra-sensitive and full of empathy, this placement can produce excellent psychologists as well as inituitives. When Saturn is negatively aspected, this placement can indicate loneliness, mental issues, or confinement. It can also mean treacherous enemies who pull shit behind the scenes to ruin the individual. Famous people with this placement: Barack Obama, Angelina Jolie, Beyoncé, Vladimir Putin, Ted Bundy.
