Talkin’ Tarot With is a monthly feature designed to introduce my readers to different tarot readers from our wonderfully diverse community!  Each month, I’ll be asking various tarot readers three questions about their tarot philosophy and style, plus pointing you to their websites and blogs so that you can learn more about them!  I like to hand pick tarot readers that I feel are talented and interesting.

Talkin' Tarot with Silver Raven

Every community needs a wise elder to look up to. The tarot community is fortunate because we have many. Silver Raven is one of those bright lights, helping clients and fellow tarot readers as we move through these uncertain times. She’s known for her steady, gentle guidance and willingness to speak up.

Silver comes from a big Italian family, and one of her family members was a witch. I have no doubt that this had a profound impact on her life – perhaps the path of witch and tarot reader was “chosen” for her!  She picked up her first tarot deck as a teen and has been reading the cards ever since, professionally for thirty years. All that experience coupled with her mystical roots guarantees you’ll be getting a top-notch, caring, and magical service every time you work with her.

Silver is the tarot reader to see when you want a wise, compassionate set of eyes on your problems. She’s also the elder we all need, right now. Get to know her and you’ll see why so many of us are looking up to her – and love her.

Q: What is your philosophy about tarot reading?

Silver: I was 17 years old when I bought my first Tarot deck (The Aquarian Tarot – I still have that deck). I knew I was very intuitive and felt that the Tarot would help me tap into that gift. I learned Tarot in the traditional way, studying card meanings, reading lots of books, learning spreads, practice readings for friends, and myself.

After several years, I lost track of Tarot. Hitting my 20s shifted my focus to starting a career and having fun. The cards started calling to me when I began learning and studying about being a witch. I felt like I finally found my true spiritual self. This time, my philosophy about Tarot took a much different turn. I kept all the practical knowledge I had acquired and continued to build on it, but now my readings became much, much more intuitive. I would throw the cards, be able to see the traditional meanings but my intuition was much louder, and I began to read the cards from the basis of what my gut/intuition was telling more than rote interpretations. That’s when my connection to Tarot took root and blossomed and my readings got real. My ability to connect to and help the people who came to me was sort of mind-blowing.

My philosophy, after 30 years of experience, is to approach each reading with a deep desire to tap into my intuition so that I can truly help my clients get needed answers but also help them grow and learn about themselves, their motivations and the ways my relationship with them and Tarot can help them create the life they want.

Q: How do you feel a client might get the most out of a reading with you?

Silver: First and foremost, they need to be open to the insight they are seeking. It has become very easy for me to sense when someone is just looking to hear what they want to hear rather than what they need to hear. Second, if they want to ask specific questions rather than an overview of where they are, they need to understand how to form their questions the right way. I have information on the website on just the subject of how to form a question. After that, all they need to do is breathe, relax, and listen!

Q: What is your best piece of advice for an aspiring Tarot reader?

Silver: Do the work. Get a deck based on the traditional Rider Waite Smith because the basic knowledge of that deck will help you when you decide to get another or more decks. And trust me, you WILL get more. Study the cards and their traditional meanings. Get to know the significance of the suits, elements, numbers, symbols, and colors. Learn some of the most widely used Tarot spreads. Practice, practice, practice. Create and use a Tarot study book – one where you take notes, jot down your insights and, most importantly, make a section for a Tarot journal.

Find a few Tarot readers and get some readings for yourself. If you can afford it, get a reading in various formats – email, phone/video, and in person. This is not just valuable in terms of what you learn from the readings. It will help you learn about forming questions, how different readers approach their readings, and you as a client. Observe and learn. Take what feels right for YOU and incorporate it into your Tarot practice. Make note of what you liked and disliked about the experience.

When you feel comfortable that you know the card meanings, throw away the little white book! Only refer to any reference material when you are really stuck. This is not easy when you are still learning to walk the Tarot path, but the object is to learn how to tap into your own intuition as you read. And remember to have fun!
