The Hit List - 2017 Faves

2017 has been a doozy of a year. In many ways, this has been one of the most challenging years for many. With the world in turmoil, trying to find the positive hasn’t always been easy. Even so, I took some time to reflect on some of my 2017 faves.

Here are the things I enjoyed this year:

Favorite book: We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Every American should read this book.

Favorite tarot book:  Modern Tarot by Michelle Tea. I love the casual tone of this book. It’s a fun read!

Favorite self help book: You’re Going to Survive by Alexandra Franzen. If you’ve ever dealt with business drama, this is the book for you.

Favorite cookbook: Backpocket Pasta by Colu Henry. I’ve been using this cookbook non-stop. Every single recipe has been a standout. If you love to cook, you MUST get this one.

Favorite tarot deck: Fountain Tarot is now available through mass market – and it’s every bit as great as the original.  I’m also in LOVE with The Crystal Unicorn Tarot (it’s not available yet – keep your peepers trained to Luna Prosperity for news on this one).

Favorite movie: Three Billboards Outside Ebbings, Missouri. This comes as close to a perfect movie as possible. Darkly comic, Frances McDormand nails her role as a grieving mother who erects three billboards when the police fails to arrest her daughter’s murderer.

Runner up: Hounds of Love. After one too many superhero movies, I told my husband that I needed something dark. He found this flick. It’s a horrific tale of a serial-killing couple in Australia. It’s disturbing as can be – the perfect antidote to Marvel stuff. The acting is tight and what’s best isn’t what they show – it’s what they imply.

Favorite album: Damn by Kendrick Lamar. But of course!

Favorite song: Feel It Still by Portugal. the Man. This damn song got stuck in my head again and again and again. It’s super catchy!

Favorite television show: Game of Thrones. Well duh. Of course! You know my sorry ass is addicted to this show! I’m sad that I have to wait another year to see My Jaime™. HBO also delivered The Deuce, a fictional series about the birth of the porn industry in New York city. It may be fiction but they got the flavor of old skool New York and the porn industry perfect. I am so happy they got the green light for another series!

Favorite restaurant: Castagna. Every year, I join my best friend for a luxe dinner at Portland’s Castagna. OMG how I love this place!

Favorite hobby: I’ve been taking cooking classes at Sur La Table. These are so fun – and I’m upping my cooking game!

Favorite experience: Too many to count. From teaching at Omega alongside tarot greats Rachel Pollack and Mary Greer, to leading a tarot + painting workshop with my buddy Chris Zydel, I’ve been fortunate enough to have some wonderful experiences this year.

Favorite trip: Hanging in Portland with my son was a blast! He loves to eat as much as I do so you can be sure we had many good culinary experiences.

So there you have it. What about you? What were some of the things you enjoyed the most this year?

This is about as festive as I get.
