The Hit List - My biggest takeaways from 2025

The year is almost over…and what a year it was. I sat back with my usual mug of hot green tea and pondered my takeaways from 2025. What did I learn? Which issues need to be put to rest once and for all? How will I enter 2026?

Here’s my list.

Good people still exist. Considering the state of the world, that’s not always easy to see. Yet, time and time again, I saw leadership, courage, and compassion from folks like Chef José Andres (my hero). No matter how loud the evil ones are, there are plenty of decent people quietly toiling away, allowing for glimmers of hope to remain.

Quiet activities are essential for my well-being. I love to read and journal. This year, these are the two things that kept me sane.

Friendship is everything, but friends must be chosen with great care. I’ve had major lessons in this arena. Some friendships grew, while others faded. As you get older (just turned the big six-oh), you realize quality is more important than quantity.

Some things must come to an end. My beloved Toyota Matrix bit the dust after twenty-plus years of excellent service. I truly loved that car. Tears were shed, and a new car now sits in my garage. Although I don’t love having a car note, I hope this little whip is my last vehicle!

Go where the joy is. Writing and teaching bring me the most joy. I am set to retire in four and a half years – but for now, I’m loving what I am doing.

No matter how prepared you are, you’re not. There were some heavy twists and turns happening behind the scenes this year. I will spare you the gory details, but needless to say, a few shocking moments meant recalibration. Sometimes, you think you know what’s going to happen…but then you realize you’re not always in control. A hard lesson for someone who likes to micromanage every detail.
