The Hit List - Down ’n outage

The other day, our internet went out completely. Not sure if it was the wind outside or something else but it went down ’n out. I couldn’t get a signal at all.

It was time to place a call into our internet provider to see what’s up. After getting shuffled through the automated phone system, I was on the line with mumbler who was almost impossible to understand. All I could grasp was something about an “outage in my area.”

Okay then. Nothing to do but wait it out.

I read a book. Watched a show. Talked to my husband about the state of the world and the latest book he just finished. Thought about some good poetry I read lately. I got my end-of-the-day office organizing done. In other words, although it was annoying to be without the buzz of of the internet, it wasn’t the end of the world.

Nothing was urgent.

It’s interesting how often we feel that sense of quiet panic when the world wide web is right at our fingertips. Can’t miss that tweet or that DM! Who liked my Instagram picture?! Better check email just in case….

It’s a false sense of urgency.

Perhaps there are times when things need immediate attention but most of the time….that’s not the truth. It’s just the new reality we’ve become accustomed to in this instant world we’re living in.

My internet has triumphantly returned. It came back while I was deep in slumber (I went to bed early too because without the internet, I couldn’t work). All is well. Nothing fell apart while I was gone.

The world kept on turning.

My life went on. (Psst so does yours even when the internet isn’t quite so convenient.)

Plants don’t give a damn about the internet.
