The Hit List - Let freedom ring..for some

This holiday weekend, I’ll be cooking up my usual summer fare of brats and corn. It’s what I do. But that’s not the only thing I’m up to. I’m also contemplating the recent – and disastrous – decisions made by the Supreme Court.

In the past few weeks, SCOTUS has:

:: Blurred the lines between church and state

:: Weakened Miranda rights

:: Decreased steps the government can take to prevent gun violence

:: Said “eff you” to protecting the environment

:: Overturned Roe V Wade

They are not done. According to Clarence Thomas, they’re coming for contraception and marriage equality next.

My question is: if this is the land of the free, why do we allow freedoms for some and not all? Why would we want to take away rights that were already granted?

I’m not sure if I’ll ever have an answer but I do know it shouldn’t be this way. We shouldn’t have our rights to privacy and happiness snatched away by six activist judges who do not represent the majority or will of the people (most folks want basic human rights, gun safety, climate protection, good public education, access to contraception, bodily autonomy, and freedom to marry who they want).

If we want to call ourselves a true democracy, then everyone needs to be free to live their lives as they see fit without worry their government will punish them. There shouldn’t be freedom for some…and none for others.

Anyhow, I’ll be thinking about all this stuff while grilling those brats. As I said, it’s what I do. (I’m also working behind the scenes to start some good trouble.) Have a safe weekend.
