The Hit List - Goodbye, little red

The shadow period of Mercury retrograde did me dirty. I was running errands the other day when the check engine light came on, which is never a good sign. After an inspection, I learned that my beloved little red car was an official death trap. The structure was “rotten” with rust and would cost thousands of dollars to fix.

It’s easy to blame Mercury retrograde, but the truth is, my car is over twenty years old. Plus, Wisconsin winters are hard on vehicles – the body gets rusted out long before the engine calls it quits.

BUMMER.

Although saying goodbye to the best car ever is one of my most hated tasks, I’m going to focus on the faithful years of service this little red hatchback provided. It always started, handled well, and never got stuck in a snowbank (all wheel drive, baby!). The heater was always nice and toasty while the air conditioner created the ideal wintry conditions, something that is important for summer haters like me. This car took me many places, and I assumed there would be more adventures ahead.

But if I’m being realistic, the car took a beating over the years. It was side-swiped more than once. A hit and run left the hood damaged and dinged. They say rust never sleeps (I’m quietly humming Neil Young right now.) well…that is true. What began as small spots became unsightly blemishes around the wheels. The bottom is all rust, all the time. It not only looks like shit, it’s not safe.

Little red needs to go. I’m not in the mood to die in this car, as much as I love it.

So goodbye it is. The research has already begun for something new. A hybrid, perhaps. All wheel drive is a must. If I can find a red car, even better. Fingers crossed I will love a new vehicle as much as this one. (I feel like I am cheating.) If I’m lucky, the next one will be the last.

Goodbye, little red. It’s been real.
