I am in the final throes of my second Saturn return. The finish line is near and I’m happy to put this astrological milestone in the rear view mirror.
What’s a Saturn return?
If you’re in astrological circles, you might have heard about the Saturn return, a rite of passage that propels you into a new level of maturity. It occurs when transiting Saturn is back in the sign of your natal chart. For example, if your Saturn is in Pisces, you’ve just gone through your return because the ringed planet has been swimming with the Fishes for the past two years.
The first Saturn return occurs around age 27 and marks the entry into adulthood. Most folks at this time finish school, start their careers, get married, or other such “adulting” things. There are plenty of books written about this transit.
There are two more Saturn returns you may experience – the second, which lands around age 57 and the third, which comes when you’re close to 90.
My Second Saturn Return
Although Saturn returns are notoriously challenging, I was looking forward to my second. The first go around was harsh, so I anticipated I knew what I was doing this time. I searched for information, but came up short. The Saturn return books seemed to be focused on the first, which meant I was going to have to white knuckle my way through this transit without a road map. Again, I assumed it wouldn’t be that big of a deal.
Wrong-o.
I should have known. My natal Saturn is tucked into a tense T-square with a slew of other planets. In astro-speak this means once my Saturn return kicked in, those harsh angles got activated. To top it off, mighty Pluto decided to sit on my Imum Coeli right before Saturn entered Pisces. Two weeks into my return, all hell broke loose.
In a nutshell, I had to rescue a loved one from an abusive situation and devote an entire year to handling that situation. This also meant taking on a “bodyguard” role that is still ongoing. (I am not afraid of bullies – and this particular jerk knows that.) Stressful? Hell yeah.
Next up, I had to face the fact that some of my so-called friends were actually frenemies. Sigh. This meant assessing who gets access – and taking a major step back from dubious types.
Tough lessons.
But it wasn’t all negative. A loved one got a proper diagnosis for an ongoing health situation, which allowed us to make appropriate lifestyle adjustments. I also had a banger of a career upgrade with my latest book winning multiple awards. My business is doing great, I am working on new projects, proposals, and have another book coming due next year (I think this is book number 9!).
So what were the takeaways from the Second Saturn Return?
:: Family first, period.
:: Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries (Saturn in Pisces is terrible at this one…).
:: Quality friendships are better than a wide circle. My pod has gotten really small and it’s better. I used to be fearful of letting people down, which meant allowing some folks to remain in my life long after they wore out the welcome mat. Now? I don’t care. Life is too short. I am not going to spend what time I have left with people who don’t really have my best interests at heart. I’m over it.
:: Health is queen. I’m working hard on taking care of myself so I can be there for the people I love.
:: I’m super proud of my accomplishments – and gearing up for the final big push before retirement. The Second Saturn Return often puts you at the top of your game and I feel good about where I’m at.
The Second Saturn Return is a time to shine bright – but it’s also a period where you can gain clarity on loose ends, lessons that need repeating, and fresh possibilities. It’s a glow up that allows you to drop old stories and morph into your true, authentic self.
In a few weeks, I’ll be a senior citizen. But I don’t feel afraid. I feel stronger, more radical, and more badass. I’m ready for the next chapter. I survived my Second Saturn Return (so you don’t have to). On to the third (but no hurry!)!
