Urban Love Notes

I am a whiner when it comes to summer.  For one, I hate sweating.  In fact, next to getting my picture taken, there is probably nothing I loathe more.  It’s been icky sticky humid and I’ve been miserable as can be….and already counting down the days until the air is crisp and I can start wearing cute jackets and boots.

So what’s a heat hater to do on the dog days of summer?  Sit inside, chilling on the internet, that’s what!

Look at these lovelies I discovered:

I am stoked for the upcoming film, Lovelace, which portrays the life of former 70’s porn star, Linda Lovelace.  The trailer just hit the web and while I’m not sure if this will be any good, I do plan on seeing it.  (Apparently Lindsay Lohan was supposed to be in the starring role but Amanda Seyfried ended up being the final casting choice.)

I love old words and 18 obsolete words, which never should have gone out of style has some that I’ve never heard before.  Lunting?  Jirble?  Groak?  I’m looking for a way to start using some of these bon mots.

One of the sites I visit on a regular basis is Chris Arnade Photography.  His work is haunting and gritty. Chris takes photos of Hunts Point addicts and prostitutes and shares their stories.  And he does this without being exploitive – you always get the feeling that he deeply cares about the well being of his subjects.  You will too.

I don’t like to dwell  too much on the darker side of life (my Moon in Scorp side does on occasion but I am actually pretty happy-go-lucky).  On the funny side of things: have you heard about Bitchy Resting Face?  This hilarious video cracked me up!  For the record, I think my cat has Bitchy Resting Face:

While poking around on Amazon, I found these super useful The 4×6″ Emergent Task Planner StickyPad (2 pack)!  I’m a listmaker plus I adore sticky notes – this has been keeping me on track!  Hell yeah to productivity!

I also noticed that there is a lot of chatter for the new tarot deck, Tarot Illuminati Kit by Kim Huggens and Erik C. Dunne.  I’ve been curbing my deck buying habit (inwardly, I WANT to be a minimalist) so for now….I’m just keeping an eye on them.  But hey, you may want to check ‘em out.

When I’m not sitting around on the web, you might find me chilling with my new favorite mag, The Source.  This slick hip hop mag is getting me up to date with some fly new beats from such artists as DJ Mustard, Future and Vinny Cha$e.  It’s always good to get some new grooves because a playa can get stale (or bored).

I’m also extremely addicted to My Cat From Hell.  Don’t be fooled by the title – cat behaviorist Jackson Galaxy is a true kitty whisperer!  He gets event the meanest puss purring like a little engine by the time he’s done.  I have learned a lot about cats and have applied his techniques to my own boys.  (I do fantasize about getting Galaxy to my house to get these cats in line but my husband said that they aren’t “bad enough”.  Whatever.)

What I’m reading:

Get Rich, Lucky Bitch!: Release Your Money Blocks and Live a First Class Life by Denise Duffield Thomas.  Denise is a the hippest manifestation coach out there.  I am nuts about her work and  am really digging her latest thing.  If you are looking to up your money attracting skillz, then you need to get this book.

The Stolen Dog by Tricia O’Malley is the true story about her beloved dog Briggs, who was kidnapped in broad daylight.  This story could have had a bad ending but Tricia wasn’t going to rest until he came home.  There are twists and turns and animal psychics galore – and the conclusion is something straight out of a movie.  That’s all I’ll say.  Get it.  A portion of proceeds go to animal rescues – so this is a book you can feel good about in every way.  Oh – and here’s a pic of the author with Briggs:
