The Hit List - Down with Naps!

I love to sleep. Getting eight hours a night? Yes, please. Because I’m super nerdy, I also enjoy keeping track. I need to know how many hours I got, if the sleep was light or deep, and if I snored too hard. My watch delivers all the info along with a “sleep score.” If I don’t get 100, I’m mad. Sleeper overachiever? Yep.

Despite my adoration of slumber, I despise naps.

I didn’t like them when I was a kid because I assumed the adults were up to something. An afternoon stuck in bed when I could be eavesdropping or reading a book? Punishment!

My mother was the same way. She was wired for action, so naps were never part of her vocabulary. Dad was a different story. He loved taking an afternoon siesta every day. When I’d visit, we’d leave him sleeping so we could gossip.

For some reason, I still don’t understand, my body decided I needed to nap last week. Not once, but twice. The first felt like a crash out from too much writing business. But the second? I don’t even know why the hell I decided I needed to hit it like a brick.

Obviously, I was more exhausted than I thought. I slept through an alarm and missed a phone call. I had been looking forward to that chat for weeks. Sure, I woke up feeling like a champ, but once I realized I biffed that conversation, I felt more like a chump.

So it’s down with naps! Not as in lying down to rest, but down as in OVER. No more! I don’t want to miss a thing.
