This past week, I played host to a guest teacher, Gianluca, over on my Patreon page. For those who are not familiar with Patreon, it’s a platform for creatives. You can find all sorts of folks like me, who use that space to share work, create community, and teach.
I do most of my teaching over there, and, on occasion, I’ll have special classes with instructors like Gianluca. Other teachers allow me to play student (when I’m not handling the tech side of Patreon). Gianluca’s class was on playing card divination, something I’ve always been interested in, but never had time to study too deeply. This was my chance to get the deets. Although I had to keep an eye on the chat and potential technology issues, I followed along, making little notes when I could. My Gemini mind is quite good at doing two things at once, so it wasn’t too hard to be a student and a tech wizard (well, that part is a stretch) at the same time.
By the time the class ended, I was obsessed. I dug out an old set of playing cards and began testing it out. MIND. BLOWN. Gianluca’s techniques were so clear – and the readings were, too. Isn’t it excellent when you learn something new? I mean, cartomancy is OLD. But for this old dog, it was new to me. Needless to say, I’m excited for part two (he’s teaching again next month!). In the meantime, I’m not abandoning my beloved tarot – but I’ll be cheating on it for a while.
One of the greatest joys is learning. Sometimes, I think about all the things I want to study (photography, painting, history, grammar, various languages, cooking techniques) and feel sad. I’m not a spring chicken. In a few years, I’ll be retired and officially a “senior citizen.” My time on this planet is getting shorter by the day. There is no way possible to learn everything on my ambitious list (or to hear all the songs ever invented and yet to come). Even so, that doesn’t mean I should just say “fuck it” and stay where I’m at. Learning something, anything, is the juice that keeps the mind sharp – and makes you interesting. All of the wisest elders – who remained with it – read books, had hobbies, and were curious about the world around them. (My Aunt Angie is 102 years old and still going strong!)
I’m always grateful for an opportunity to expand my horizons and spin the hamster wheel in my brain. Because what happens when you don’t? Simple. You rust.
xo
