The Hit List - Nothing is forever

I grew up in an old house with old furniture. We didn’t have a lot of money, so new furniture would have been a luxury. Although we had the occasional hand-me-down, most of the time, my parents repaired what we had. Even though Mom never took a class, she figured out how to reupholster the Morris chairs when the cushions became worn or lumpy. With seven people in the house, that happened often. Her ingenuity meant those chairs lasted. It also gave me a fondness for antiques.

Many years ago, my husband and I purchased an old wingback chair. It was in mint condition with nubby fabric. It didn’t take long for the cats to decide it made the perfect scratching post. Before long, the fabric was destroyed. (Yes, we used all the things to try and get these cats to stop, but they had other ideas. You can’t control cats.) Unlike my Mom, I am not handy, so I tossed a throw over it. The cats are long gone, but the chair remains with the throw.

Some things can be repaired.
Some things can be left as they are, even if they’re not perfect.
Some things can be completely redone.
Some things can be rebuilt into something better.
Some things are trashed and need to be thrown out.
Nothing is permanent.
Nothing is forever.

I think of this often when I look at the state of the world. Lately, it seems like there is an onslaught of bad news and negative hot takes. Of course, it’s easy to shut off social media and stick your head in the sand if you don’t want to hear it. But that doesn’t make it go away.

Living in a constant state of terror does a number on your nervous system. So it’s no surprise that folks seek out astrology or tarot readings when it seems like everything is about to reach a boiling point. Will this be forever? When will it get better? Is this the end?

Those are questions I would receive back when I read for the public. Often, I would remind people that:

Some things can be repaired.
Some things can be left as they are, even if they’re not perfect.
Some things can be completely redone.
Some things can be rebuilt into something better.
Some things are trashed and need to be thrown out.
Nothing is permanent.
Nothing is forever.

Everything is always in flux. Even laws. The overturning of Roe was proof that something viewed as “settled” wasn’t. But that can be overturned, too. Cities can be rebuilt, governments torn down, democracies wiped out or rebooted, trees replanted, and buildings recycled into something else. The world is a giant compost heap – right down to the laws.

My sensitive daughter has worried more than most about the world coming to an end. What if there’s a nuclear war? I had no real reassurance other than if that happens, we’ll be gone in the blink of an eye. Then, the planet would heal, new things would grow, and cats would take over the world. Because nothing is forever except the common knowledge that cats make better rulers.
