The Hit List - What's old is suddenly new and different

I am in the middle of a book launch. It’s book number eight, so by now I kinda know what I’m doing. There are the standard things: newsletter announcements, hitting up social media, and setting up book tours. Of course, there’s also the fun part – delighting your community with giveaways and new content. It’s exciting and also a lot of work.

When my first book dropped almost seven years ago, it was bewildering – and scary. I didn’t know what I was doing. The next few launches were a bit more chill – but there was still plenty to do. This time, I’m enjoying the rollout but there are some “old” things that are new and different. For one, I’m doing a mini tour but I won’t be flying. Covid is still rampant and I must be careful because I live with folks who are immune-compromised. It’s one of the reasons why I didn’t travel for last year’s project, Tarot for Kids. Things were too precarious. They still are to some degree.

Also different is the fact that I’m getting older and these days, I feel it. My capacity is still strong but my need for rest is at a critical point. That means I’m not always able to do as much in a day as I used to. I still make deadlines but I also have to say no to a lot of things if I want to continue to do that. While I hate turning folks down, it’s either that or burnout. I’m not interested in exhaustion.

The other thing I’m doing differently: allowing other people to give me a hand. I am an independent sort so it’s hard for me to do that. But again; if I want this book launch to be a happy one, help is needed.

In the backdrop, I’m also writing book number nine. I’d love to beat my deadline by a few months or weeks (the old me loves that) but again…things are different. It’s okay to make it to the finish line on time instead of being an early bird. That’s the thing about life (and getting older): you have to be willing to adapt. If you refuse, the universe has a way of nudging you along a new trail. I’m paying close attention to those gentle pushes – and following suit.

So what about you? Where are you changing the game? How are you making things work – when the old way isn’t working?

Boxes of books!
