The Hit List - Out In the Cold

It’s brutal out there. As my grandmother would say, “Colder than a witch’s teat.” Temps have been dangerously low here in my neck o’ the woods. So much so that I have decided to hunker down for as long as possible. Don’t get me wrong: I’m a cold-weather gal. But this? It’s even too much for my hot-blooded constitution.

Of course, while I’m cozy with plenty of snacks at hand, I worry about those who are less fortunate – or who are forced to leave the house for work or other things. My lifestyle may not be glamorous or influencer-level, but I have a roof over my head – and I can work from home. This is a luxury.

Many do not have these options. The unhoused. Sanitation department. Bus drivers. Folks living in poorly maintained buildings with absent landlords. Hospital workers. Brave protestors. Those who have no choice but to go into the office or risk being fired (and losing their health insurance). I think about all of these people. I worry about animals, too. Even so, there is much I can do. So can you.

If you are lucky enough to have what you need and can stay protected from this horrible weather, give gratitude and grace. Not just to your maker or whatever you believe in, but also to the people who are out there, every day, braving the cold or other tough circumstances. And if you encounter any of these folks, give them a smile, a thank you, a hot cup of coffee, or whatever feels appropriate. Donate where you can, whether that be to the local shelters or mutual aid. Put out food for the wild animals. Be especially kind to unhoused folks.

Although it doesn’t feel like it, soon the weather will turn, and we’ll forget about this horrible cold. But let’s never forget about the people who are always out there, by whatever circumstances.
