The Hit List - Poor listeners

I grew up in a household of poor listeners. We talked over each other, which is common in large families, especially those who don’t know how to listen. Get us together for a holiday, and it’s still the same loud, raucous vibe. All talk, no one hearing a thing.

However, I was forced to pay attention to what was being said because I had…drumroll…hearing issues. The irony was not lost on me.

When I couldn’t hear, my head got lost in the clouds, causing me to miss important things, especially at school. Then, I’d scramble to catch up, mad at myself for spacing out. Thankfully, I was a good student, so I never got too far behind. I quickly learned that I needed to be ultra-alert if I wanted to stay on track (and out of trouble). So I studied the way people talked closely. I listened to every word, watched their expressions, and the subtle clues their lips revealed. What were they really saying?

This attention to words became the foundation for my career. After all, tarot readers must be attentive. We cannot tune out our clients. Presence is required.

It has spilled over into every area of my life. I notice little things that others might miss. Vigilance pays off. Sometimes, it’s the wee red flag. Other times, it’s the golden opportunity in the middle of chaos. When you know how to listen, to look, you have an advantage.

Anyone can learn how to do this. It doesn’t matter if you grew up in a household of shouters, too impatient to wait and respond. Get quiet. Listen closely. Watch people’s faces, reactions. Pay attention to their mouths – mouths reveal more than eyes. Let words fall before you pick up the thread and speak your peace. Better yet, be silent.

Silence speaks the loudest of all.
