The Hit List - Take care of each other

The government shutdown continues. Will it end? I’m afraid the tea leaves, tarot cards, and whatnot have no answers at this time. Which means: we’re rudderless.

Many folks will lose their SNAP benefits. Those of us who pay for private health insurance (freelancers, artists, small business owners) are bracing for massive rate hikes as the Affordable Care Act is on the line – and a bargaining chip in this shutdown. Life is about to get painful.

So what can we do? We have to take care of each other. Here is a list of ideas.

1. Project Mailstorm. I love this! @theshabbycreekcottage shared this on Instagram. Basically, it’s a protest by mail. If we begin to send daily handwritten letters to the government, it becomes much harder to ignore than a phone call or email. Flood the system. Overwhelm them. Let’s do this!
2. Donate to mutual aid. This puts dollars directly in the hands of folks who need help. Mutual Aid Hub can help you find locations in your neighborhood. Can’t find one nearby? Start one. American Friends Service Committee has a helpful post on how to get one started. Read it here. Also, check out this guide from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Mutual Aid 101.
3. Donate time and money to local food banks. I prefer giving money because they can invest in what’s actually needed most. (Here in Milwaukee, Kinship and Hunger Task Force are reliable sources of food for hungry folks.)
4. Contact your local representatives and local anti-hunger organizations. Speak up! Even if this doesn’t affect you, IT DOES. If folks run out of SNAP, you will absorb the loss costs at your local grocery store.
5. Check in on neighbors, especially seniors or families. Do they have enough? Can you bring a meal or a bag of groceries? Does anyone need transportation? Child care? Be a good neighbor!

Let’s be real: this shutdown is cruel. No one should ever have to go hungry. Period. Food, education, shelter, clean water, and health care should all be human rights. But until the government gets with the program, we have to step up and take care of each other. We’re all we’ve got.
