The Hit List - This old desk

I have an old desk. It’s not fancy. Just some pressed wood thing. The most important thing to me: it’s functional. It needs to be because I spend a lot of time here. However, over time, I started to have a lot of wrist issues due to the weird “ledge,” which puts pressure on my right hand when I use my mouse. I’m not sure what the designer was thinking. It’s a sure-fire way to acquire carpal tunnel.

Yesterday, my husband finally ripped it off. My hands are happy. I can continue doing my work. Sometimes old things need to go.

A few years ago, I purchased a fancy chair with lots of “ergonomic” support. At first, it felt like sitting on a cloud. But a few months in, my hips started to hurt. I knew the chair was the culprit, even though I didn’t want to admit it. That chair wasn’t cheap.

Eventually, I had to face the fact and toss the chair. Now? I have a vintage wooden chair under my tush. I can work long hours without hip pain. (Note: this might not work for you. I also wear minimal footwear, which means I’m pretty much barefoot all day.)

When you’re a writer, your desk is your whole universe. While my setup is no-frills and older than dirt, it serves me well. Perhaps one day I’ll purchase a better writing table with zero clutter. But for now, this old desk is just fine.
