The Hit List - Time keeps on slipping, slipping

“Time keeps on slipping, slipping…into the future.” Everyone from my era will recognize those iconic lyrics from Fly Like An Eagle by the Steve Miller Band. That song was all over the airwaves back in the day. Now I found myself humming that tune right after I purchased a new watch. (Yeah, I’m corny like that.) After I finished setting this gadget up, I was off to meet with a laser hair specialist about some pesky chin foliage I sprouted a few years before “the big change” set in. While I always playfully declared that a “beard hid a multitude of sins” for the men in my life, I had no interest in becoming a bearded lady (not that there is anything wrong with that, mind you).

Later on, I found myself pondering how time has truly slipped. I’m almost sixty. Where did the time go? And boy howdy…the changes have been fierce.

I used to stay up all night. Now I’m obsessed with getting a perfect sleep score, which means I hit the sack around ten.

Back in the day, I was a social butterfly. These days I’m a reclusive grub, hiding away from the public eye (and sun) as much as possible.

Menopause means I cannot eat whatever I want any longer. I still do, but now my pants don’t fit right. I have to exercise, whereas before it was optional. My legs are mysteriously hairless, but it all migrated to my chin.

I’m a grandmother. I also realized that caring for a baby is hard. My “experience” means jack shit when my arthritic hand struggles to contain a squirming, yelling infant. Damn.

I’ve changed.

I don’t know if I should say “ouch” or “hooray” on these realizations. Maybe both? It’s funny how time really does slip away, and so do different parts of you.

However, there are still some things that remain the same. I adore cooking. I’m a voracious reader. My obsession with tarot and astrology is still going strong over forty years later. I’ve got a messy desk. I am still a seeker, eternal student, lover of truth, fierce mama, and creative junkie.

Time may be slipping, but some things will never change.
