The Hit List - Upstairs Downstairs and Back Up Again

The other day I was rushing about as I usually do, arms filled with packages and whatnot as I sped downstairs. My mother hated when I attempted to grab as many things as possible when cleaning or leaving the house. She called this a “lazy man’s load,” as in loading up to avoid more than one trip.

For some reason, this used to piss me off (mothers have a way of doing that). I never listened to her because dammit, I was always in a hurry and didn’t want to waste my time. So the lazy man’s load was my method of operation for all things including errands, laundry, and more.

Anyhow, I couldn’t see where I was going, my foot slipped and down the stairs I went, bumping my noggin along the way. I cried out for my husband, who happened to be in the room just above. He came running down to find me laying on the landing like a broken doll. I sat up and said I was fine until I tried to stand. My ankle was NOT happy.

Up the stairs I went to examine the situation. As I peeled off my thick black socks, I could see this wasn’t going to be the outcome I wanted. My ankle was showing signs of swelling and a faint blue color was emerging. It was sprained. Sigh.

A little knot began to form at the back of my skull. Was it a concussion? I would have to sit around and find out. If you know me, sitting around is not my cup o’ tea. But I couldn’t walk so that problem was solved!

We elevated the foot and iced it immediately. Suddenly, my life was going to be different for some time. Mom’s warning about the “lazy man’s load” was on autorepeat in my head. Double sigh.

A few hours later, we assessed my skull – it didn’t seem to be a concussion, thankfully. But the ankle was sore AF. More icing, a CBD gummy, ibuprofen, and rest would be the new plan. And so it has been for the past few days. I’m getting around better thanks to my snazzy red walker but probably won’t be going anywhere for a bit.

So what’s the takeaway? Slow down. Don’t try to cram too many things at once. It’s okay to waste time. Listen to mom.

We are all damaged.
