The Hit List - This year won’t quit

Ah, 2020…I had so much to look forward to. A new book, my daughter’s wedding, and trips galore. With the exception of the book, everything came to a grinding halt.

Cancel culture took on a new meaning in my life as I watched all the things come apart at the seams. No book tours, no live events, no wedding. Everything canceled or postponed. And my yoga studio, which has been open for almost two decades…closed since March. (Dear students: I will open one day. I promise.)

While I could have handled all of that, a loved one was gravely ill to the point where I began planning funerals in my brain. And then the cat died.

Cruel?

Yes.

But that’s the way this 2020 cookie wants to crumble I guess.

Just when I thought I had a handle on grieving, my tenant revealed that her partner’s roommate tested positive for Covid. This is the year that just won’t quit. We’re already living like recluses over here – and now? It’s Howard Hughes all the way. The risk to my loved one is too great. If they get Covid, they will die. No foolin’. Sigh.

So we wait for test results and pray a whole lot. We’re not the only ones riding this roller coaster of a year on wing and prayer. I’ve talked to many other people who have lost businesses, had to cancel events, or are dealing with loss.

2020, you suck. This is the “crying uncle” moment.  We’re done with you. We are ready for change. A fresh start. Something better than the ride you’ve taken us on.

A wise friend once said to me that there are years where not much seems to happen. Suddenly, you get one year that seems to be nothing but a shit show. And then…it’s back to the mundane for a long stretch. I have found this to be true. Frankly, I’m ready for the boring, the routine, the day-to-day grind. 2021, you better BRING IT (with an extra side of dull)!

Still missing my gray boy.
