make your wish

When my dear Aunt Deal passed away many years ago, the family came together to deal with her belongings.  As we sifted through the house dresses and bric a brac, I discovered a tiny pewter trinket in a little plastic bag.

I thought it was only right to investigate it further before tossing it in the trash.

I twisted off the top, only to find (to my delight) a teeny genie in the bottle!  (Yes, that is him in the picture above.  He’s about three inches tall!)

This little curio has been a treasured prize on my shelf ever since.  And it’s made me super curious.  Where did she get this?  Was it a gift and if so, from who?  Why was it put in a bag and tucked away?  Did she ever make a wish on it?  How old is it?

I’ll never know the answers to those questions but I am endlessly fascinated by the possible backstory of that wee pewter genie to this day. (I like to examine it from time to time.  Yes, I’m that obsessed over it.  If anyone has a clue to the origins of this little guy, I’d love to hear.)

The genie got me thinking about what I might leave behind when I decide to make my final exit.  (I hope that’s not for a long time, yo.)

My fantasy:  the last time I was in San Francisco, I ventured into a shop in Chinatown that had a table filled with pill boxes.  They came in colorful shapes of everything you could imagine: fancy birds, sleeping cats, chairs, elegant women, and more.  I’d like to buy a whole bunch of them and  put a little note in each one for my kids to find after I’m gone. Notes that would say “I am going to miss you” or “I love you so much!”

Little reminders that while I was here, I loved every minute with them.

(Of course, I have a mischievous sense of humor so some of those notes would include silly stuff such as “Whatchoo looking at Willis?” and “Nosy little bastard, aren’t you?”)

Just the thought of them opening those mysterious little pill boxes and discovering those notes gives me all sorts of pleasure (the same kind I get when I look at the mini genie).

What about you?  What treasures might you leave behind for your loved ones to find?

don't leave behind your cat

TaoZen hopes he is never left behind.  Especially when I am trying to use the restroom apparently.

Pizza Hut’s ads with incompetent cats is cute BUT I’m obsessed with the raver cats in the new Meow Mix ad.  BEST commercial – EVER.
