Talkin’ Tarot With is a monthly feature designed to introduce my readers to different tarot readers from our wonderfully diverse community!  Each month, I’ll be asking various tarot readers three questions about their tarot philosophy and style, plus pointing you to their websites and blogs so that you can learn more about them!  I like to hand pick tarot readers that I feel are talented and interesting.

Talkin' Tarot with Dina Berrin

I met Dina Berrin years ago at the annual Readers’ Studio tarot conference. Her warm smile and sparkly personality drew me and we became friends. Recently, she was a guest on my Tarot Bytes podcast – her wisdom made me a fan. In fact, I enjoyed talking with her so much that we did a second episode. My listeners loved her too.

It was only natural that I needed to get her on the blog next. Dina’s introduction to divination began with her grandmother, who taught her about astrology when she was a young girl. This sparked her interest in all things mystical, and soon she was studying tarot, numerology, and other divinatory arts. Eventually, this evolved into a thriving practice where Dina offers readings and classes to her adoring fans. She’s also a coach, helping folks find their life purpose. This wonder woman lives in New York City with her family. When she’s not slinging cards or teaching, you can find her leading Tarot And Wine or Tarot and Yoga nights.

 Bio:

In Dina’s own words: “My education in divination started at an early age. My grandmother, a small but mighty woman, was an astrology devotee. She used to speak with me in terms of zodiac signs, characteristics, and attributes. This began what has become a life long love and endless curiosity about what is really going on beneath that smooth and shiny surface we show the world.

Having studied tarot, astrology, numerology, and a few other disciplines for over 25 years, my readings have evolved into a mix of my knowledge. I do readings for private clients, as well as small gatherings, parties of all types and corporate events. In addition, I teach classes on how to read tarot like a pro, and host Tarot and wine nights where I guarantee everyone leaves being able to read with a few easy tricks and tools I teach them. At my yoga and tarot events, we explore the power of connecting to your intuition. I am also a Co-Active life coach helping clients find their inner leader, how to bring more vibrancy into their lives and true life purpose.   I am also a wife and mom of three kids who know how to keep me on my toes. We live in New York City.”

Q: What is your philosophy about tarot reading?

Dina: Tarot is magical, mysterious, magnetic, surprising, unendingly interesting and wise. I fell in love with tarot many moons ago and I continue to learn, grow and feel so tremendously inspired by it. Remaining open and releasing expectations is where the work is done. I use the tarot as a tool for insight, strengthening intuition and to help grease the wheels when it’s time to make a decision. As a reader, my role is to shine a light, guide and empower. We shuffle the cards and the synchronicity of the universe presents us with a message. One of my first tarot teachers shared that information is available when you/the client are ready to hear it. I believe that. Clients come looking for answers. The cards don’t control your fate, you do. Tarot is a mirror – it reflects your inner world – and helps you create your story.

Q: How do you feel a client might get the most out of a reading with you?

Dina:  Clients – especially at parties or events – are often so excited about the idea of getting a reading that they sometimes forget to think about what they want to know or how they want to feel when the reading is complete. Figuring out your intentions or sharing expectations before starting your reading can make all the difference. If you need help forming or clarifying a question, I’m always happy to help. Less is more – being simple and concise usually brings up the most direct and clear response. Keeping the focus on asking things like ‘what can I do?’ or ‘what do I need to know?’. And, be honest. There are no judgments here – your secrets are safe with me.

Q: What is your best piece of advice for an aspiring Tarot reader?

Dina:  So many thoughts came up for me, I am going to share a few. Pulling a tarot card every day, journaling about card meanings/interpretations, and practicing on family and friends are all super helpful,

You’ll want to find a deck that speaks to you and then create a personal connection with that deck (you can add new decks to your repertoire when you feel ready). This deck will be your constant companion as you learn to read the cards.

Memorizing the meaning is useful, but, also read the picture in the card. What stands out? What’s your initial instinct upon seeing it? Keep a notebook of meanings.

Create your own tarot reading style and then stick with what techniques work best for you.

The rule of tarot is . . . there are no rules . . . just as long as you are ethical.
