The Hit List - 9 things I’ve learned recently

Life is a series of lessons. I firmly believe that. No matter how wise I think I’ve become, it seems that the Universe doesn’t want me to cruise control through his journey. Instead, there are always things to learn.

Sometimes the lessons are swift and brutal. Other times, subtle like the whiskers on a cat. But one thing is for sure:  when you’re awake at the wheel, you are aware of what the takeaway is.

Latest lessons:

  1. When someone is determined to be self-destructive, no amount of support is going to change the outcome. Your good efforts, intentions, and boundaries will be null and void.
  2. Never sit next to a sick person on a plane if you can help it.
  3. Doctor bills are negotiable if you’re willing to ask.
  4. Words hold power.
  5. Giving advice to a peer, especially advice they NEED to hear will often fall on deaf ears. Wash your hands when that happens. Some folks need to learn the hard way.
  6. Solitude is bliss.
  7. Be ready to help your elders. They are precious resources.
  8. Not everybody enjoys walking 20,000 steps in a day.
  9. It’s perfectly fine to not do a thing when you don’t feel well. Being productive 24/7 isn’t necessary.

That’s the latest batch of life instruction. I’m sure the week ahead will hold new things to learn and process. Because those lessons are ongoing. As long as you’re breathing, the Universe will be doling out pop quizzes.

One more lesson: friends that stick with you through thick and thin are the best. I love you, Simone.
