The Hit List - That's my best friend

Last week, I was feeling pissy about some transgression. So I did what I always do: bitch to my husband and then call my bestie Simone for advice. We’ve been friends for over thirty years so no one, other than my husband and kids, knows me better.

Soon we were laughing our asses off (as we always do) and hatching a plan to visit the Prince Immersive Experience in Chicago. I got off the phone feeling a million times lighter.

Everyone needs a Simone in their life.

The kind of friend who gets you and accepts you, even at your not-so-great-moments. The one person you can call who always makes sense and knows exactly what to say – and how to make you laugh. Someone who is always there – and ready to jet off at a moment’s notice because PRINCE.

Did you know that friendship is essential for happiness? It’s true! Researchers discovered it is vital for our quality of life, no matter if you’re an extrovert – or an introvert like me.

Friendship isn’t something that happens automatically. Like any relationship, it requires effort. You must be kind, authentic, and supportive. You also need to know when to give a friend breathing room – and not take it personally. It’s important to cherish the things that make your friends unique rather than trying to mold them to be like you. Friendships shouldn’t come with an agenda either (ex: this person might help me land that great job!). Those rarely last. Real friendships are about intimacy and acceptance, not what you can get.

The best ones are those that stand the test of time, that can weather the hard stuff and bounce back, or that take right up where they left off after a period of no contact due to busyness or other such things (life can interfere with the best of pals). Long, deep relationships add substance to your life. Therefore, they are worth cultivating.

Life is better with friends. Today, give thanks to the ones who love you as you are. Make sure they know you love them right back.
