The Hit List - Elders and mentors

This weekend is a rough one for me. It marks sixteen years since my mother passed away. Also, Sunday would have been my father’s birthday. If he were still alive, he’d be 107 years old.

Although much time has gone by, it seems like only a day ago we were talking at the kitchen table. Those memories are all I have left other than some mementos and photos.

But my parents also left me and my siblings with an impeccable work ethic. All four of us inherited their love of productivity. We enjoy being busy, especially when it comes to doing our work. It’s interesting to see how this lesson was passed down.

The work of elders and mentors lives on, long after they are gone.

I’ve had the privilege of learning from some mighty fine teachers over the years. Folks I respected such as BKS Iyengar. I’ll never forget the time I was in the audience listening to Annette Bening interview him. His grace, wisdom, and humor impacted me deeply. I still think about that day.

Right now, another one of my mentors is dealing with a serious illness. Rachel Pollack is a legend in Tarot. I’ve had the good fortune of attending her classes at conferences. We’ve also shared the main stage together a few times, which was a massive honor. Every day, I am sending prayers and good wishes for her healing. I’m not alone in that either. Most Tarot readers have been impacted by her work in some way. She is an icon, the wisest tarot elder, and one of the nicest humans you’ll ever meet.

We must never take our elders, teachers, and mentors for granted.  They deserve the ultimate respect for passing down their experience and wisdom. To be in the presence of greatness and knowledge is a gift, one that can be taken away in the blink of an eye.

So today, thank the teachers, mentors, and wise elders in your life. Show your gratitude for what they are giving you. Honor them NOW while they are still here.

Because one day they will be gone even though their legacy will live on.
