The Hit List - Wisdom teething
This week, I was sitting in the dentist’s chair, waiting for my diagnosis. I’ve had massive dental issues since I’ve been a little girl, so this isn’t unusual. A big part of my issues stem from the fact that we didn’t have money for dentists when I was a child. As an adult, I’ve had to pay the price over and over.

The past year has been challenging – and expensive, so I was bracing for the worst.

“You’re not going to like this,” the dentist said as she pulled out a little X-ray of my mouth. “You need to get your wisdom teeth out.”

They were growing in sideways and creating bone loss in the back of my mouth. Plus, they were the sole culprit for my misaligned bite.

My wisdom teeth came in many years ago. They didn’t bother me too much so I didn’t think about them. Over the years, my bite slowly became more crooked – which didn’t affect my ability to eat, mind you. However, this also lead to TMJ issues – and they aren’t easy to clean.

Now they are creating the perfect conditions for bone loss. Not good.

Frankly, I’m relieved. My bite was fine in my 20s and I’m looking forward to getting that sorted out. Plus, having my wisdom teeth sure didn’t make me feel any smarter. So out they go in a few weeks.

For folks like me with dental drama, sitting in the chair is rarely pleasant. Even routine checkups are fear-filled ordeals, with worse-case scenarios running wild. Plus, there is a lot of shame around having a “problem mouth.” Our society is filled with images of influencers and celebrities with perfect smiles. If you don’t have that, you always feel like you don’t measure up.

I have to remind myself that I’m fine just as I am, misaligned bite and whatnot. Now that is wisdom.
