The Hit List - No one tells you this work will make you cry“Your work must be so fun!”

I hear that from time to time.

From the outside, being a tarot reader probably seems “easy” or entertaining.  Tossing cards, looking at the future, meeting all sorts o’ interesting people…yep – sounds like a blast.

There is SOME of that.

But beneath the smiles and the sometimes party-like carnival atmosphere lies a different story that no one tells you: this work will make you cry. A lot.

You’ll cry with clients when they share their sad stories.  A tale of grief is hard to bear, even for the most stoic.  Sit in on a reading with a mother who lost her child and you’ll see what I mean.  Your tears will come.

You’ll have a hard time keeping it in when the dying woman in front of you wants to spend the whole reading asking about how her grandchildren will fare after she’s gone (this was the most meaningful reading I’ve ever done in my life – I lost it after she left).

You’ll be sad when you find out that one of your favorite clients just passed away (this was last week for me).  Tarot readers can get mighty close to some of their peeps.  They become like a second family.

You might find yourself getting a case of the sniffles when you get fan mail (I get teary eyed every single time).  And yes, you’ll also tear up when you get hate mail from a mean stranger or a jealous peer determined to knock you down a peg or two (you’ll also wisely delete that crap asap because those are wasted tears).

You’ll feel down when there is too much work. Or not enough.  And let’s not forget those times when you are sick as a dog but you don’t want to let anyone down – yes…that might just make you cry.

Let’s not ignore how blue you’ll feel when your family feels you work too much and you worry that you’re neglecting them – and then you’re all bummed out that you’re not a better mother…partner…sibling….daughter, etc.

You’ll cry when you get it right.  And when you get it wrong. Sometimes…for no reason at all.

Sad tears, happy tears…all the tears.

You are going to bawl your eyes out, and from time to time, lose your shit even if you’re a stoic girl made from good, solid Mid-Western farm stock (moi).  It’s because this work brings out your tender side – and tears are inevitable when you’re vulnerable. This work gives you the feels.

So count on it – even though no one tells you that.
