The Hit List - Not me.
This past week, I received an email from a follower on Instagram. They wanted to alert me that someone had created a bogus account using my name and picture. As you can imagine, I got hotter than a ghost pepper. (Worse yet, they chose an unflattering photo, which added fuel to my ire.)

Off I went, letting Instagram know that this was not me. The phony account was quickly deleted. Believe it or not, this is not the first time. In fact, I had this same scenario pop up a few weeks ago.

You’ve gotta wonder what makes someone think it’s okay to swipe someone’s online identity. In one case, the offender sent private messages to people asking if they wanted “me” to read their cards. It’s obvious what that ne’er was up to. The other situations…well, it might be the same motive or something else. I don’t understand that mentality because I’d never think to play Catfish, ever. What you see is what you get (unflattering pics ‘n all).

Attempting to clone a profile isn’t the only way that some shady types try to get a foot in someone else’s business door. I’ve seen people do other grimy tactics such as posting links to their site on other people’s social media or blog posts (that’s happened more than once in my world). SO. GROSS.

I understand that people want to make a living. I get that. But you can’t shortcut your way to success by pretending to be someone else. Hopping on someone’s coattails doesn’t get you far either. The best way to create a successful, enduring business or brand is to simply be YOU.

Not me.

Not anyone else.

Because people want to work with those they know, like, and trust. And no one trusts a fraud or a clout chaser. Do better, people. Do YOU.
